I wanted to try it out once but the intro dialogue was going on forever and could not be skipped.
Remember SiN, peeps. The bug mess that was (still a neat game with a lot of stuff way ahead its time, shadowed by half-life's release)

You just press escape, AFAIK

jefequeso: I have played through 1 1/2 levels. So far, I don't think it's awful. Actually, I'm having fun. It feels rough, but not any more so than, say, Blood 1 or Shogo. In some ways it has a bit of an Unreal vibe, actually, which I like.

I haven't gotten to the companions yet.

So, be honest... is Daikatana really the worst thing ever? Or was all the negativity just a backlash against the development cycle and the marketing?

Or does it just get really bad once companions come into play?
I think it's okay. I never played it when it was new. In fact, I just picked it up only months ago here on Gog and patched it with a fan made patch. So I haven't really encountered any of those problems the "veterans" have.
It's important to remember that, before Daikatana, John Romero could do no wrong. He was the creative guy behind Doom and Quake, so a lot of people expected Daikatana to be the next big FPS franchise.

Also, I think most people back in the day played the N64 version, not the PC version.
I played part of it, and that I definitely would not call the worst gaming experience I've had. A bit bland overall maybe. But I'd be interested to see how I feel about it now with the latest community fixes installed (which I heard lift Daikatana onto an as-intended-by-Romero level).
Anyone play Dark Raid? I hear it's really bad... but for some reason I still feel compelled to buy it.

Indeed. I even have a copy of SIN episode one for the Source engine.

They were gonna make it episodic but the game didn't sell and the company folded.

jefequeso: So I'm playing Daikatana...
Was it court ordered?

Half-Life can go suck a dick. Was so glad to remove those games from my Steam library.

Xel.naga: Half-Life can go suck a dick.
It can? Man, I gotta go play it again!
I was dissapointed with Blood 2 too. Is that .. "disappointed" because the first Blood is a great game full of fun.

Hmm if you are looking for suffering with Daikatana, try the N64 version.

AlKim: Expectations were so high that whatever Ion Storm produced could never have met them.

rtcvb32: Not true. Very likely if they kept with the Quake 1 engine and just finished the game in a somewhat timely manner it could have been far better. But porting engine after engine, starting over repeatedly... And the bad money management...
But once Quake 2 shipped, Daikatana would no longer look as good. That is why they jumped ship — which turned out to be a very poor decision.

I wonder in what ways Daikatana and Duke Nukem Forever are similar and distinct, as they were games that were too hyped for their own good.
