Hi everyone, I'm sure there must be a simple answer to this but....

Whenever i do a search in windows 10, i eventually get a list of results.... then i click on one and not sure if its what i am looking for? I right click and select 'open file location'

It then closes the search results and opens the location.

I discover its not the file i was looking for, and i have to redo the whole search each time.

I find myself being afraid to open locations now in case its not the right file and i have to redo the whole damn search over again!

I know i can look at file properties, but when i am not sure it is the right file, i really want to look in the file location...

Is there a better way?

While not familiar with Windows 10, I wonder... Try changing the properties. In windows XP/7 there's an option for opening more windows vs using the same window.

Also are you doing the search in the windows bar? If so use a different window (Try opening your computer or your drive you're searching), since you will then have forward/back history and it will cache the results until the window is shut or the views are refreshed.

I could be wrong on these, since my experience with 10 is minimal, but they might be a little better than what you've experienced.

Yea you would think the back arrow would work, but no, it starts redoing the entire search from scratch, dumb shit of a thing.

There is an option for opening everything in new windows, but that can get annoying, and constantly annoying, whereas i don't do searches that often..... take me half an hour to find the option anyway..... after all, it is windows 10, its not like they actually put options where you can find them!!! Hell no!..... Actually Windows 10 is the first operating system where i have been forced to google every little tiny thing i have ever wanted to do! Its unnecessarily frustrating that way.

Google did not help with my file search problem though, hence why i posted here
Hmm.. I'd personally recommend switching to Windows 7, but depends on your situation.

Unfortunately if the forward/back buttons don't help then you're probably stuck with what you got. Lots of wasted time... :(

Sorry I can NOT resists:

Do not use Win 10 ;)

Again sorry you asked for ;)

And yes I know it doesn't help you, sorry ;)
Get "Everything" search tool:
https://www.voidtools.com/

You can install or use portable.

Never use the Windows search again.
Better Still Get windows 10 ANNIVERSARY EDITION it's MUCH BETTER IMHO it works very well

You're doing the search from the explorer menu? If yes, the back should take you back to your search results, and it has been working that way for me since always. If you are doing the search from the start menu (or the search box in the task bar), there shouldn't be any back arrow to press, so the search results will be lost.

Edit: I am using the anniversary edition right now, but I think it worked the same way with the original Win10 installation.

Doesn't CTRL+"open file location" open a new window?

Wasn't it shift + open?

They keep changing it from version to version ;)

I think that was only related to "open with" (choose program) in older versions.

As I hinted, lost overview ;)

Once open with, then open folder, open whatever, disappeared.....Man if they just for once could keep the same ;)

Hey that actually worked!

Thanks

But the reality is, the fact that i have to come here and ask this kind of question for something that is an obvious simple requirement, is more evidence that Microsoft are doing stupid things totally unnecessarily.

It frustrates me, Microsoft are so ingenious with their products, but then inexplicably doing OBVIOUSLY dumb things here and there... i just don't get it?

Its like Einstein one minute discovering relativity then the next minute cannot figure out how a door knob works and gets trapped inside his house. Something smart one minute, something blatantly obviously dumb the next.

You're welcome : )
Yeah, MS should have improved the previous systems, instead of adding changes noone needed.

Bill gates said "remove things people don't need and add things people do need"

But the team leader was a bit deaf, and thought he said "remove things people need and add things people don't need"

"yes sir"
