You guys ARE aware of the various mods out there that greatly improve the graphics, yes? Mods that add new content? People complain about the controls and yes, they are a pain at first, but like others have said change them to alternate and it doesn't take long to get the hang of it.

Many of the mods out there are foreign, so difficult to find for English speakers, but it isn't that hard to find things you'll like. Look up the DX11 mod, or L'hiver. Imagine wandering around G1 with many more trees, and those trees casting shadows! Check out Big Nature Mod.

Here's a list of mods to try:

Though it's in german, and I don't speak german, I didn't have much trouble greatly improving my game.

It would be nice if G1 were remade, but we all know 99.9% of the games we love won't be. Until then, there are mods.

My shit taste detector is off the scale.

I hope you don't kiss your mother with that mouth. =P

Moonbeam: A remaster would be amazing, as there are no other games quite like Gothic.
Not even the sequels or the RIsen games? (I haven't played the sequels yet, I recently started playing the series with the first Gothic game.)

Some other discussion I had suggested the first game is generally inferior and simpler to the sequels, like Gothic 2 (concentrates more on mere combat etc.). I still find the first Gothic game pleasant enough to play, but it seems apparent it is not Skyrim in size and complexity or anything, nor has the wealth of different ways to play the game like Fallout games.

In a way that is an advantage, I don't need all my RPGs to be daunting projects that take the rest of my life to play. It still gives me that nice "yeah, now I levelled up and got a kick-ass two-hand axe, and better armor, and can finally beat those biter lizars to pulp!"-feeling that I like in RPGs.

Oh I meant all the Gothic games are very good. (1 to 3 that is) Risen is nice but not quite as memorable as Gothic:)

timppu: As it happens, I am currently playing Gothic...
On what OS? Win XP, virtual machine?

EDIT: Ignore this. I somehow skipped over the part where you specifically talk about your Win 7 configuration.

Sure.
Or, maybe not. Whatever.

tfishell: Elex's release made me remember that Gothic 1 isn't officially supported on GOG past Windows Vista, and a portion of the reviews mention how clunky the controls are.
I played it on Win7/64 without any issues or clunky controls as far as I remember... besides, I kind of like the dated graphics and overall atmosphere of the game (and how a meatbug can crush you when you start the game if you're not careful :D).

Upgrading/remastering it graphically may not necessarily be a good thing for people that have played the original.
Not sure if I want Gothic remaster / remake. A quality of life improvement would be welcome, so is better graphic. But I don't have any problem with it's control / graphic. I remember playing it pretty standard, WASD with mouse look.

Yeah, i don't feel the controls are that bad. It takes a bit of learning to interact with people/items/inventory and combat since you must use two keys at the same time for that, but with the "alternative controls", it is merely about remembering to keep left mouse button pressed while using either WASD or cursor keys. Once you get it, it is no problem.

It took me awhile to learn jumping and climbing though ("Oh, you use the right mouse button for those!"), and only yesterday, already in Chapter 3, I accidentally learned that the mouse scrollwheel does something too (zooming you in and out of your character).

Anyway, for people who like gamepads, I guess gamepad controls would fit this game perfectly. As long as they were not required. I keep hearing rumors of these PC gamers who refuse to play with mouse+keyboard (which makes me wonder why are they PC gamers in the first place, but anyways...).
