It was made permanently free when GOG finally got the Classic Redux release up on the store.

GOG probably didn't have much of a say in the matter when they received the DRM free builds of Classic Redux. Prior to that, Devolver had declared the classic release of the game permanently free (through Steam), around the same time they had announced that Flying Wild Hog were developing the reboot series for them.

The only unfortunate thing is, the Shadow Warrior Classic release on Steam includes content like beta versions/etc. that the GOG release lacks. It's not a great deal of importance to people who aren't super fans of the game, but it would be nice if both versions had the same content available either way.
