Elmofongo: Not many people played a Sega Saturn. And you expect answers from a mostly PC gamer community.

KiNgBrAdLeY7: One word. Emulators.
Of note, since this is a site where we like to pay for digital re-releases of classic games, is that SotN is for sale on both PSN and XBL, and it is unneccesary to pirate it.

Hadn't you used the term "steal" I could give a nod in agreement.

Also, it's Konami, they don't care.
So do u recommend the sega saturn version over the playstation one? I didn't know anything about differences. Thanks for sharing. I always have played the PSX version.

Definitely not. The Saturn version adds some new content, but the quality of that new content is pretty questionable and the game's technical performance is significantly worse than on the PS1. Stick to the original.
I think I should give this Saturn version a try. Sotn on psx is one of my favorite games all the time I simply lost count how many times I beat it.

What about the x360 port? Heard it's the best one. Would love to try this gem once again but in hd this time ;P

Who's talking piracy? I use emulators because my old game systems are tucked away in an attic. I still have the discs though, so I ripped them to use with my emulators. Well, that and convenience of not having to dig through my disc collection to find the one I need for a game.PSX, PS2, PSP... I also have my N64 games backed up, but I didn't go after ones I don't own because that's just theft. Still, people assume emulators are piracy and those people are wrong.

Wait, there is an Xbox 360 port? I never know about this.
Damn, now I really want to see sotn in hd.
Too bad I don't have x360

Here it is, my Balikpapan friend ;P
And this screenshot shows how awesome it is ;)

The Xbox Live Arcade port is based off of the PlayStation version of the game. It does not contain the extra content found in the Saturn version nor the modified content found in the version included with Dracula X Chronicles on PSP.

Our definitions of "awesome" are clearly very different. For one, the game is not up-scaled, it is just put inside of a 16:9 border. To make matters worse, they used a filter to remove the pixelation which results in everything looking smudged and blotchy. Just look at the text in the picture you shared; if it weren't such a large point size, it would be unreadable. Just look at the word "Rest" above Richter's life count, you can't read it! I fail to understand why pixels have become such an issue with HD releases of sprite-based games. If you aren't going to redraw the sprites from scratch, a-la Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix, then why bother messing with them at all?

I guess redrawing everything simply cost too much for games with animation as detailed as SOTN. This is the game that blows me away with it's animation quality. I imagine load of works required to redraw everything in HD would be monumental, and better spent for new game.

Still, it's good to hear this game is being ported here and there, as this is the one that cemented the 'vania' part in metroidvania genre. Along with RPG, metroidvania (especially more vania-like) is my favorite genre

KiNgBrAdLeY7: Also, i really wonder why and how GOG couldn't convince Konami to sell here "Rondo of Blood" (symphony of the night prequel), as far as i am aware it had a PC release, back in the day...
This "Rondo of Blood PC" is actually a PC-Engine version wrapped with emulator. If you Google it, you'll likely find it. I've played it myself and it actually became my favourite traditional Castlevania.

It undoubtedly would. Still, if a company isn't willing to invest the money, I would much rather them leave the visuals alone. I would prefer the pixel art of the PSone original over the [url=http://www.mobygames.com/images/shots/l/430217-castlevania-symphony-of-the-night-xbox-360-screenshot-dracula.jpg]sloppy filter used on the XBLA version.
Just giving saturn version a try using Yabause
Fullscreen bugs, using window mode and software rendering runs perfectly
Maria is an interesting character to play, a bit stronger than Alucard, but that's understandable since she wouldn't get any level up. Alucard can end up very strong. There's also a different song at the beginning, haven't dig around too much. Somehow yabause can't register numpad key for movement, it only recognize up.

Sigh, I really wish I have a gamepad. It's almost impossible to do superjump using keyboard

Whoa! Didn't know that. So I've enjoyed SOTN in the most of sub-par of ways and, still, was a great experience? Damn.. I mean, whoa. I mean, damn! :P
But Tekkaman-san, just re-releasing something for modern devices is something I call truly unique. Letterbox or not, just for the fact that you can play them on the big screen through hdmi/wireless pads...
It pleases me so much, that's why I really love the classic re-releases in here.

But yeah, SF remix was a work of art. But something is better than nothing, huh?
That's why I want my emulated saturn classics / dc ones asap ;P

ps: what about the Dreamcast collection for windows, x360, ps3? Does it pleases ya?
