Is there such a virus or malware known as "scanner"? when i tried to ixquick it, all of the results came up with virus scanners (instead of a virus called scanner LOL).

I was at my home page a few minutes ago (XFinity dot com) checking my email and then went to go to one of of my other regular old sites when suddenly my laptop makes a loud funny sound, the browser turns all white and small pop up box appears saying your machine has been infected with a virus, click OK to continue. I couldn't close the browser or anything.

So I just went on the start menu and selected "Shut Down". And it did. While it was shutting down, a screen popped up saying one program was still running and when it ended it made that same loud funny sound again and I noticed the name of the program that was shutting down was SCANNER.

There's no way this was a real virus right? You can't just get rid of viruses by shutting down and restarting your computer. Was this some sort of out of control ad for a virus scanner maybe?? I've run two scans with two different malware software since and both report 0 threats.

Anyone have any ideas? Scared the shit out of me for a second. If that's someones idea of advertising, I'd like five minutes in a room alone with him to explain why that's not a good idea.

You get these occasionally, I had one the other day going onto cardgamedb website, noise, flashing. Could t shut browser. You did the right thing, never click on anything in the browser, it is all geared to fear you into clicking the button or link. Cancel the window with windows process manager, then run a deep virus scan, run malwarebytes etc. It should be fine. Having a script disabler can help with these things. Also, set your home page something a bit safer, I have mine pointed to a google wrapper search engine (it takes your search, anonymisizes it and then sends to google). Also, be careful what sites you visit, certain types of sites are covered in these types of thngs, think we all know what they are...you naughty boy ;op
