is it possible to save the current animated background on the main page (that one with the squirrel) as a .gif file?
This question / problem has been solved by mike_cesaraimage
The squirrel seems to be a multi-part vector image, so I suspect it would be easier to ask the GOG staff for a copy. It does look nice.

just to be sure. a multi-part vector image can be saved as a file on my pc, so that i can open it with the common windows image viewer and it will work?
It's a svg, Why don't you use some screen capture software?

Not really, uses vectors to draw image instead of pixels. Not using such a software, nothing comes to my mind..(fraps? there are many of them..) Sorry about that. I'd suggest cleaning code a bit and capture only background with the squirrel..
Actually only the Squirrel itself is a rendered picture. The arm and the nut are dynamically created polygons (an svg, probalby created and embedded with Adobe Illustrator). Hence, no direct way to get this as a gif. You could capture a video and save frame by frame as pictures and then use a gif maker tool to join them into a single gif (some video software might be able to safe it directly to gif format; A quick web search should yield some results).

EDIT: Or simply make several screenshots, crop the squirrel and add them into a single gif.

How about this one or this one?
I've captured the animation as a gif, which ends up at about 180k. However it's playback is so slow it's not worth it. Better off as a smacker file, or avi. Or maybe i captured the squirrel at too high a resolution and a lower one would play well.

edit: I just realized as i think about it, the framerate was goofed up, thinking 1000:1 so the rate is 10x slower which is why it was running slow... give me a few i'll have a gif ready :)

I've captured animation with VLC. Download screenmp4.jpg, change extension to .mp4 and convert to gif or whatever.. ; )

Neat.

I wonder - has anyone else, upon seeing this pic for the first time, clicked on the hole in the tree (with eyes) to see if anything comes out of it? ^_^;;;

I tried to click on a lot of things on the frontpage to see what might happen. Not much did.
Or Use LiveEdit to remove unwanted Texts and images and then capture animation in video using VLC (yes VLC!) and then edit that in Photoshop or simply convert in .GIF
