Neonshuffler: I think you are highly uneducated to what konami are up to atm. Like I said anything not to do with PES, pachinko and mobile games is canned or being canned. Do you honestly think they let the maker of MGS and other key people just walk out on them? There moving out of video games into gambling big time.
I'm well aware of konami plans but you don't seem to understand that it doesn't matter, they're not going to let go of their franchises for cheap and neither will anyone buy a "name" for the price they're asking.
They make far FAR FAR more on gambling alone. Video games are chump change to them. Silent hill is arguably the most recognizable and most relevant horror game in video game history. That is something microsoft would fucking love to capitalize on. I have never played a single game but I have a pyramid shirt and read all about the lore of the games and its something I want to visit. There is a shitload of money to be made.
Thank god you said "arguably" because Resident Evil is number one there (even if it has more shoot bang bang on it it's still a survival horror like SH) and the SH brand has been on decline (in quality and sales) in the last few years, the same can be said about RE but at least that one sell way better than SH...
But let's think about it, let's say that MS buys the IP, i don't have a clue how much would it cost but let's say that it would be 200~300M, now what will they do? Which of their devs will they trust the ip? And how much will they invest in making a new title? $50~70M? Do you think that the userbase of XB1 or potential buyers is enough to justify the costs?
Also you have to add into the fact that konami marketing team was always shit. They put out 3 games in a single month with a week of hype. Makes you think if the heads of the company have not been trying to kill off the video games department for more effort to be put into the gambling sector.
True but we have to see what happened with the japanese industry:
- Big names (devs and teams) were disbanded;
- Xbox 360 was dead on japan and it was hard to develop games for the ps3 thanks to Cell processor;
- They have a low birth rate, kids are interested in stuff like pokemons and similar, adults are more focused in their work and old people... do old people stuff?
- Mobile games is huge over there.
They decided to shift their games/ips to western developers that happened to be... er... average (and cheap) so that their ip's catter the western audience (that still buys home console games) and that knew how to work with the hardware better than them, still they failed, it's no wonder why the current state of the japanese gaming industry.
This is why everyone wants to know what with kojima/konami, we're talking about a dev that konami allowed to take his time making the games and they've spent a large amount on the Fox engine development to be used in what? PES/WE?
Silent hill most assuredly does still have a large following. I got a band shirt with pyramid head dragging a corpse. Also the rise of "torture porn".
Kojima Will just do what the lead designer of castelvania done. Just go make an independent version that is awesome if Microsoft does not throw there money behind him.
Here's the thing, it does have a following but not a massive following to justify the AAA costs, the example that you gave is perfect for that, BloodStained (IGA/Castlevania) amassed almost $3M until now and i doubt that it will reach the usual +$30M for AAA titles.
I could see Kojima making visual novels or something more simple (2D) as a game but something that required a high budget (mgs) would be really unlikely to happen without the help of a publisher.
Sony won't touch this. The only AAA game they dev in house are the baseball games for ps4 as far as I know.
Errrrr, Santa Monica Studios (God of War), Guerilla Studios (Killzone), Evolution Studios (Motorstorm/Driveclub), Naughty Dogs (Uncharted, The Last of Us), Poliphony Digital (Gran Turismo),etc. They have way more studios than MS but in i also don't see Sony buying any of the ip's, if anything they will co-develop it.
