maybe somebody can help me out here: I'm looking for the name of an old game that I played in the year 2000 (approximately). It was a 2D RPG/adventure where you travelled around with a party in the holy land during the times of the crusades. I think one goal was to find Excalibur, it might also have been in the title.

Does anybody know this game?

The first thing that came to mind was Spirit of Excalibur (1990) (Wishlist entry) or its sequel Vengeance of Excalibur (1991) (Wishlist entry).
They obviously wouldn't fit anyway, assuming the game you've played was a title released around the 2000s.

It's very likely that it's "Vengeance of Excalibur", as Swedrami stated (although the action is set in Islamic Spain, not in the Holy Land.

I also thought of Lionheart but the game is set in Europe.

There's also Conquests of Camelot since it has Excalibur and the Holy Land. But it only features the player character and not a party.

Are there any games about actual crusades, besides fluff stories and romanced crap?

Only can think of action-oriented titles like the first Assassin's Creed or
Knights of the Temple: Infernal Crusade (Wishlist entry)
Knights of the Temple II (Wishlist entry)
The Cursed Crusade (Wishlist entry)
which obviously aren't exactly accurate in their portrayal of the crusades either.

As far as Excalibur/Crusade/Templar/etc-related games are concerned there's also Conquests of Camelot: The Search for the Grail here on GoG as well as
Crusader: Adventure Out of Time (Wishlist entry).

The Knights of the Temple games were recently released on Zoom Platform (2-3 weeks ago).

A number of strategy games, but I think there are not any RPGs.

Maybe Rol Crusaders? A Spanish DOS game from the mid 90s.
