"Won't Back Down" was what got me into classic rock, ~2005-ish. Great songs.

UPDATE: it is confirmed by his manager that Tom Petty passed away at 8:40 PM PT, this is not a hoax or a gag. it's real. I am truly lost for words.
So emotional right now after replaying his old albums over and over again. Rock on Tom Petty!
My first real contact to Tom Petty was this music video:

Only later I came to know all his other works, but then again many of them came after that particular song/music video.

If I'd have to pick one (or two) favorite Tom Petty songs, either "Runnin' Down a Dream" or "American Girl". I think the first time I heard the latter song was in the movie "Silence of the Lambs", where the victim was singing it while driving.

Then again there seems to be lots of Tom Petty songs I don't recognize at least by their name. On the other hand, I think I haven't heard all Pink Floyd songs either, even though it is my favorite band of all time.

Holy crap.

Please no "free falling" suicidal "jump off the balcony" jokes ;(
~40 years of great rock and roll. Rest in peace, Tom.

Hate to say it, but folks my age are going to see our music heroes passing with greater frequency. So many of them in their 60s and 70s still rocking hard as ever, but time does things.
This broke my heart. I don't want to go to work today, I want to grieve because he's been a part of mine and my immediate family's life as long as I've been alive.

Mom was howling like a banshee yesterday when she found out. She's finally ok today, but still very sad. She said the only other time she's ever been so upset in her life was when John Lennon died when I was a baby.

It's the great circle of life, we all know that, but it still sucks when people unexpectedly die that you look up to. He was the last DJ of rock and roll. Who's going to stand up for us rockers now? Maybe Zakk Wylde, but he's more heavy metal....

tinyE: I don't have the words.
Same here ;-(
I will miss his awesome talent. I attended several concerts back in the day and it always felt like you were watching a good friend on stage rather than a rock star. A humble, talented artist that cannot be replaced. RIP
