This one is too depressing to think about.

Going to take me a while to get over this.

Thank you Mr Hooper for all your films, good & bad.

I know he has much more well known films but Lifeforce was my absolute favourite. I watched it repeatedly as a teenager. Very sad. Condolences to his loved ones.

ABSOLUTELY

I was just PMing someone they need to check it out.
What!? God damn. I've not seen Lifeforce, but Texas Chain Saw Massacre is, of course, a classic, and while by most accounts it was largely done by Spielberg, I feel he really did leave his mark on Poltergeist. Not to mention his other work, like Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, or the Freddy's Nightmares episode No More Mr. Nice Guy. I always wanted to see Mortuary, even if I've heard it's one of his lesser efforts.

Holy shit, I didn't even realise he made it when I saw the news about his death. I haven't even seen Texas Chainsaw, I absolutely despise slasher movies. But Lifeforce... man, I love that movie. It's beyond awesome. It's the best, craziest thing ever. I had no idea what I'm in for when I watched it, and the entire time I was on the edge of my seat, probably with the biggest grin possible without half of my head falling off.

Texas Chain Saw Massacre is very interesting because it has this association of gore gore gore, but the original is, in fact, way heavier on the suspense (I'd heard Hooper wanted it to be PG, so he tried to avoid the gore as much as possible, not that it worked). The early slasher film triumvirate of Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Black Christmas, and Halloween (and even earlier, Psycho) were all very focused on the suspense, an interesting period between the giallo proto-slashers and the '80's post-Friday the 13th slashers.

And then Tobe Hooper thought that people kept on missing the humour in the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre (and it is quite the funny movie if you're not too terrified to miss it), and so when he did Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 he did this absolutely ludicrous, over the top comedy slasher movie that's great in a different way from the original.

This.

I saw an interview with Gunnar Hansen a few years back when he mentioned the producers of the remake coming to him before they started filming, maybe to get him to do some add stuff for it.

They sat him down and said, paraphrasing here, 'This is going to be way different than the original. We are toning down the gore and going more psychological terror with the remake.'

Hansen's reply, which does NOT NEED to be paraphrased, "Have you even watched the fucking thing!?"
