Hey, I just finished the game myself and outside a few drops here and there, I managed to play through the game with only some minor issues related to forcing the game at 1080p. My PC is a kind of crappy off-the-shelf and I never bothered to use any unofficial patches, but it still ran fine. If you want to try it without patching, I recommend using the console and then typing this in:
/r_customheight (1080, but whatever your preferred resolution is)
/r_customwidth (1920, again, depends on your monitor's resolution, check it before borking)
/r_mode -1
/vid_restart
If you change the settings to stuff and it makes the game not run anymore, just go into the game's folder -> Main then delete wolfconfig. It'll make a new folder as soon as you launch the game but then you'll have to reconfigure everything to your standards. Just keep messing around with it until everything works as you want it.
Mind, if you do force it at 1080p, the game will crash on some level loads, but this is fixed by simply changing the resolution, so be sure to quick save before transitioning to the next level. Once loaded, simply retype all of that into the console and the game will run at 1080p for the rest of the level with no fuss.
I'm sure installing some recommended patches is better, but this way works fine as far as playing single player goes.
