Ys VI returns to PC.

Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim, an English-language Windows premiere, is available now, with a 15% discount, DRM-free on GOG.com!

Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim is available on PC, in English, for the very first time ever. Ys is an action-jRPG series where your thumbs, combat, and platforming skills will all be tested - the series' focus on keeping combat fast, fluid and enjoyable is as clear as ever. Though the game premiered on PSP and PS2 several years ago, this release can easily be considered the "definitive" edition with a brand new translation, true widescreen support, updated mechanics (including better checkpoints), and support for modern controllers. If you think you've got what it takes - the aptly named Catastrophe Mode may just you be your next challenge. The future of Ys is bright for PC gamers!

Return once more to the world of Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim, DRM-free on GOG.com! The launch discount will last for one week, until Tuesday, April 5, 9:59 AM GMT.

Redfern: Wishlist, but i wait for greater discount. 14% off on release is...not impressive. Previous one was at least 25% off

Grargar: That's because those games were already released on Steam a while ago. YS VI has been simultaneously released on GOG/Steam/Humble.
Well, its sure nice to have zero day release, but considering i still not really played previous one and that 14% is not critical discount (like 50% off on Transistor) i think this one can wait for now :)
But i sure its good game and one day it will be in my lib.

budejovice: An unfortunate release day for Ys.
Pretty much. *goes back to blasting Stormtroopers* ;)
Looks nice!
If this game is as good as the PS2 release, then it's pretty awesome and I highly recommend it to everyone.

Am I missing something? Was it already on PC or is this the first time ever?

It was originally released on the PC, but only in Japanese. Later, it would be released on the PS2 and the PSP in English and, now, this is the first official English release on the PC.
Good release.
Deal good until April 5?

Either it's already over or that's a very long time!

It was 1 week before release and now 1 week after too, two weeks total.
Am I the only one who is rather disappointed we skipped from 1 and 2, all the way to 6?

I'm one of those sort who really prefers things in chronological order. So this is really bugging the hell out of me, especially if there's references to any of the other games in this one.

I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm glad we're getting it period. The Ys series is very under-appreciated/represented here in the US - although I'd known/read about it in years past, I never actually saw any of the games growing up.

YS: The Oath in Felghana is a remake of 3, so in essence we jumped from 3 to 6. 5 was never released on the PC, while a remake of 4 was released on PC, but only in China for the time being.

Ah, I didn't know that about Felghana. I figured it was just a new entry like Origin had been. Also, I know/understand about 4 and 5, it's just frustrating.

Ys is rather heavy on continuity, considering the main character is constant between games and characters/events are frequently referenced or even influence the later ones. Anyone starting up VI will have a hard time escaping the feeling they've been dropped into a plot that has been going without them for some time.

I do know that the Turbografx and SNES versions of 4 and 5 have fan translations out there, but I was really looking forwards versions that didn't require emulation.

eh there isn't really much direct continuity after 2 anyway from what I remember. Mainly 4, and the remake nuked most of those elements (felt like rewriting the plot made it worse tbh).

6 is probably the only other one, since it has some callbacks to 3.
The game has been awesome so far. Many areas where you do 0 damage to enemies which makes it clear you have to go back and get stronger. I enjoy the new sword system taking the place of the magic artifacts from Felghana and Origin.

I hear that Felghana and Origin are based off of this game's engine? And the series takes a different turn in gameplay in Ys Seven?

yes, that's correct.

7 and Celceta have a three character party system (with each having a different attack type between slash/bash/pierce which different enemies are weak to). And a skill/special attack system that you level up by using.
