There will be blood. Delicious blood.

Vampire®: The Masquerade - Bloodlines™, the timeless RPG masterpiece that has sucked many a gamer's time, is now available, DRM-free on GOG.com.

Intoxicating. Macabre. Vital. These are both traits of blood and of Vampire®: The Masquerade - Bloodlines™, the RPG that forever changed expectations on how the creatures of the night should be depicted in videogames. Was it the ridiculous replayability? The versatility of our vampiric abilities? The gripping visual and sound design? Perhaps the memorable NPCs and stellar writing. One thing is for certain: much like the daunting Antediluvians, this is a game whose allure only grows stronger with time. No point in resisting it any longer.

Sink your teeth into the definitive bloodsucking experience that is Vampire®: The Masquerade - Bloodlines™, DRM-free on GOG.com.

Note: This version includes third-party technical fixes, courtesy of Wesp5. The full unofficial patch, which also includes additional content, can be found over at Patches Scrolls.

JudasIscariot: No...just kicks really hard in the ol' shins :P

Thiev: Disclaimer:
I never actually physically abused any coworker / minion of mine during working hours.
It's not the during, it's the after that is unmentioned :P

NuffCatnip: So you abuse them on a psychological level?
That I call 'motivating'

A kick to the shins is meant to annoy but not incapacitate so that people will still work :P

JMich: Isn't that what a smack to the back of the head is for?
A kick to the shins can be done from a sitting position and you can literally roll up, kick the shin, and roll away :D We have high backed office chairs so people can protect from smacks to the back of the head :P

Thiev: during working hours.
avatar
Grargar: But after those?
Well, I couldn't say 'never' because I was training martial arts with some of my office buddies ;)

I have ways of working and protecting myself from rampant office Thievs :P

tfishell: Also, anybody else notice this disclaimer on the game card? "Disclaimer: Vampire: The Masquerade-Bloodlines, as distributed by GOG.com, contains third-party technical fixes to ensure compatibility on modern systems. This material is not made, nor supported, by Activision. Furthermore, Activision does not endorse, nor take any responsibility, for the content of the game as distributed by GOG.com. Support for the game under the operating systems, as listed on the product page, is the sole responsibility of GOG.com." Relatively understandable for legal reasons, but does this appear on any other games?
It's there on publisher's request.

SeduceMePlz: [..]
all content related changes are in Unofficial Patch subfolder and the game is launched with a parameter
all engine related changes (dlls and such) are shared, but official ones are still accessible in game folder (with .12 extension)
avatar
SeduceMePlz: Any chance we could get an official TPG GOG version as an alternate download? I don't have strong feelings for or against either patch, but I find the "fixes-only" motto of TPG appealing.
No. We can support only one version.
avatar
JudasIscariot: Actually, we already had a version of the game where all you would have is the original executable without Wesp's patch in case a) we couldn't come to an agreement with Wesp5 and patches-scrolls and b) we wanted to have the original version in case people wanted to use other mods that may have been incompatible with Wesp5's patch.
avatar
SeduceMePlz: Oh, hey, I don't know why this didn't cross my mind before (not enough sleep, probably... running on far too little lately), but could you offer that version as an unsupported extra?

That'd make it quite easy for those who want it to have both the normal GOG UP installation and a second TPG installation.

Or maybe offer it as an 'invisible' download that you have know about to access (I recall you guys doing this for some older patches for Shadow Warrior 2013).

Sidenote: 12-hour shits really suck, even on the slow nights when you have time to play around on the forums.
Install the game, rename two files and you basically have a fully vanilla build.

Rename the original "vampire.exe" something like "vampire_old.exe" and rename "vampire.exe.12" to "vampire.exe" and there's your vanilla build.

SeduceMePlz: Cool. If it really is that easy, and this modified setup doesn't cause any issues with TPG, I'll be happy and satisfied.

Sorry if I've been somewhat annoying about it. If you missed it, this is why it was troubling me:

avatar
SeduceMePlz: Edit: To clarify, what's bugging me is the inability to follow TPG's very specific instructions to install it on a fresh, unaltered game directory. I really hope it'll be a very simple procedure to get it working on the GOG version, but since there's a degree of uncertainty caused by having to deviate from its instructions, I wish there was vanilla package so I wouldn't have to worry about it.

Another way to put it: I know how to properly install UP to a vanilla directory. I know how to properly install TPG to a vanilla directory. So with a vanilla version, I have the choice and can be reasonably certain things will work as they're supposed to work since I'm following the instructions. What I don't know, because it isn't something you're supposed to do and thus there aren't any instructions, is how to install TPG to a directory already patched with UP. So if I end up wanting to use TPG, I feel like I have to spend time really investigating what is going on in that directory before I can be reasonably certain I'll have a proper install.
avatar
SeduceMePlz:
Doesn't the TPG patch offer you a way to point to a given directory like all installers do?
avatar
vv221: So, let’s get this straight: running the game via vampire.exe gives us a Unofficial Patch experience, and running it via vampire.exe.12 gives us the vanilla experience?
There’s no switch needed on top of that ("vampire.exe -UnofficialPatch" or something alike)?

Well, why are you asking, of course I’m thinking about a ./play.it script here ;P
'vampire.exe -game Unofficial_Patch' runs game with UP changes
'vampire.exe' runs vanilla assets ('legacy' mode)

however, vampire.exe is still the one modified by UP, to support engine changes (like mod loading / widescreen)
vampire.exe.12 is original vanilla exe that can be run after renaming, if one so chooses

Yeiiow: PS: Also, shouldn't this information regarding the 3rd party fixes also be displayed on the store page for the game? Right now the only way to be aware of it before purchasing is via this announcement that i am sure not 100% of the potential buyers will see.

Yeiiow: The full Unofficial patch should in my opinion be offered as a "Goodies", and while we are at it, do the same with SWKotOR2 and the The Sith Lords - Restored Content MOD. In my opinion that kind of mods/unofficial patches are almost a must have for those games.
As long as I remember, UP was exclusive to The Patches-Scrolls website. We tried to respect that ;) Including the Basic version goes well with both that exclusivity and our usual policy of avoiding in-game changes in fixes.
avatar
Yeiiow: [...]
In this particular case any changes to the gamecard would have to be approved by the publisher. I may inquire, but I cannot promise anything ;)
avatar
shmerl: I don't think so. You renamed exe.12 to exe and applied the patch? The binary itself is supposed to be stock binary with 1.2 official patch already applied. I'm not really familiar with true patch itself, so you'd have to dig for more details.
avatar
Forum_Pirate: Yeah.

Maybe I screwed up the install of the patch, I'll kill it and try again.

I hope you appreciate this GoG, I could probably have the steam version working with it by now but I like you and want to support your vision even if it gives me a bunch of trouble. (Though this is the first time I've had any trouble with your games, even with modding)

Ok, I got it working I think. Not 100% on the how.

I downloaded and installed the patch into the vampire folder like I was supposed to, moved the exe, renamed the .exe.12 to just .exe, and then had GoG verify/sync the games files, told galaxy to launch the legacy version, and then activated the .exe manually anyways.

Kinda happened on accident, so I don't know which of those steps is necessary. I'm stumbling around in the dark here. If anyone wants to experiment to see what of that is necessary and what isn't and wether it's working properly or not, please post the results here for myself/others. I will too.

I'll update if I run into problems, but it's running and will actually play the game instead of crashing on launch or on selecting newgame.
Don't verify & repair the game as that will return the game's files to a default state if you are trying to use a different patch or mod for the game.
