Toziuha Night: Order of the Alchemists is a 2D side-scrolling action platformer with features of a metroidvania RPG – and it’s now available on GOG!

Play as Xandria, a beautiful and skilled alchemist who, using an iron whip, fights against the most fearsome demons and other alchemists seeking to obtain a millenary power. To accomplish her mission, Xandria will use various chemical elements to perform powerful attacks and spells.

Now on GOG!

Breja: Quite the contrary, I don't really care for metroidvanias, and it takes something like the nice art of Feudal Alloy or Guacamelee to grab my interest.
avatar
TheGrimLord: Well, then why would you care to comment on a game that isn't even in your wheelhouse?
Because, like I just said, it could be. It just has to work for it, because the genre itself isn't a draw for me, but it doesn't disqualify it either.

avatar
TheGrimLord: You know, every time I see a game I don't like, I'm gonna comment something negative on it as well. Which means every RTS, every simulation game and every freaking soulslike/roguelike title and all deck builders.
Good, that's what those threads are for. The more feedback the better. Praise isn't worth much if we're not willing to be critical as well.

It saddens me a little that people say it's AI or porn. The game only uses anime art and is completely free of any inappropriate content. At no point is anything shown that isn't seen in the screenshots; the website shows exactly what the game contains. The game was made with the support of the community and without any budget at the beginning. Little by little, goals were achieved to improve it.

Thinking of getting the game.

I do, however, need to ask one question:
* How is the difficulty curve? Does it start out manageable and not get too easy later on?
(Also, I hope the game gives me control over saving and doesn't forcibly save over your only save the way some games do.)
avatar
TheGrimLord: This is a very serious game and you'll get destroyed on the nornal difficulty. After the prologue you start at level one and one bone from one skeleton will take massive amounts of damage. In fact, there's nothing even remotely pornographic about this game. It can be a very, very, painful experience though and on normal it turns Castlevania into Hollow Knight.
How is the difficulty in the late game?
avatar
Breja: Games are a visual medium. How they look is a crucial part of the experience. I've got well over three hundred gameplay hours worth of backlog, awesome old games to replay and over 140 games waiting their turn on my wishlist. I do not need to make allowances. More than that - I downright need to picky.
avatar
TheGrimLord: Oh and I'm not done. There is no game on your wishlist even remotely like this. No Metroidvania that we have ever gotten that is like this. Out of all the ones we have released, this is the only game like classic igavania on GOG that isn't Bloodstained. Many of the others are all souls and such. This is the real deal.
Don't forget Timespinner.

(Although Timespinner has the problem where your defense scales too quickly, making the late game too easy.)

Toziuha night is hard as classic castlevanias, but you can switch between easy/normal difficult with no penalization :3

Not that I personally needed any (already picked up the game), but thanks for the clarification.
Can't really blame people for immediately assuming the worst though, considering the omnipresent and rampant rise of AI-generated slop.
avatar
TheGrimLord: Well, if you like these kinds of games and you are honestly letting the art be the thing that holds you back from playing one of the best classic style Castlevania games in recent memory, then you are doing yourself a disservice.
avatar
Breja: Quite the contrary, I don't really care for metroidvanias, and it takes something like the nice art of Feudal Alloy or Guacamelee to grab my interest.
Well, you have preferences for some specific art style, but that does not entitle you to do a hate train on art styles you don't like and try to pull it down.

I don't have purchased the game yet, but after reading up more of it and what is behind the surface, I'll give it a go.

The developer does have put much heart bleed into it, if you consider, that this game is fully moddable and also intended to be a platform for user mods and total conversions.

@dannygaray60: maybe you add on Steam in the guide section some instructions for modding and what exactly is needed to do basic mods.

Also, I think, maybe you add some more weapons to it, as that seems to be somewhat the weak point of that; but still I'll go buy it at the weekend. As a metreoidvania fan, it looks fantastic and has really much potential.

First of all thank you for bringing your game to gog. As a fan of everything old school Castlevania and Igavania i will definately buy this.
Please ignore the "everything with anime aesthetics is porn" and "everything i don't like is AI generated" delusional crowds and keep doing passion projects like this.
Devs like you are sorely needed in the western industry.

"Hate train"? Kentucky Fried Christ, I just stated my opinion and asked a question. How am I "trying to pull it down"? Did I demand the game be removed from the store? Did I tell anyone they shouldn't buy it?

I swear, people today completely lost their ability to treat opinions they don't share like a normal thing that they are. I wouldn't even make a second post in this thread if you people didn't get triggered like landmines in a stampede over seeing a negative comment.

Hikage_XjS: and "everything i don't like is AI generated" delusional crowds
God damn it, when have I ever said anything even remotely resembling that? Is it really that hard to not maliciously misrepresent what someone says? I asked a damn question. Because it looked to me like AI. There's tons of games here with graphics I don't like, I never raise the AI question unless I feel it is warranted.

So let me be very clear with you. Play on the easy mode because that is set to the same difficulty as classic Castlevania DS games. Normal is far more brutal and enemies really pack a punch - it's rough. It's extremely frustrating and far more difficult. The bosses are as challenging as Hollow Knight in the early game. Again, everything takes a great deal of health from your character on Normal. I've heard the game is open source, so I wouldn't mind getting in there and making normal like easy and easy like complete cake and hard being what normal is now. It's unbalanced a lot I think, and also there is a freeze bug when you level up that needs to be fixed. She'll get stuck in place, sometimes in dangerous situations. But it is 1.0 so I realize there's still fixes to come. (Note I am playing the 1.0 itch version, not the GOG version).

The thing is:
* I'm not asking about the early game difficulty at this point.
* I am asking about the late game difficulty.
* My question is, does the game sustain its difficulty into the later part of the game? (This is something many games in the genre (and many games with growth systems in general) fail at.)

Breja: Even by anime standards this is hideous. Was this made by AI? It looks AI-ish.
AI witch hunts need to stop.

Thank you for publishing the game on GOG.
Please implement achievement and publish the Soundtrack. I'd like to have all related media in one place.

Yes, GOG supports soundtracks and artbooks: https://docs.gog.com/dlc-and-extras/

Regarding achievements, there are two ways of doing this.
Native method:
https://docs.gog.com/sdk-game-engines/
https://docs.gog.com/sdk-stats-and-achievements/

Steam wrapper:
https://docs.gog.com/steam-sdk-wrapper/
https://docs.gog.com/sdk-steam-import/

The second option may be simpler.

I'm only 25% in and on the easy mode. However, when I played normal, as soon as I got to the next area I was completely smoked by the enemies. For example, you get strong enough to beat the enemies in one area, but you'll get knocked back down to size by the enemies in another. If it keeps up with that pace, you will certainly struggle through every new area. Remember this is the community that built this game. They've become masochists as of late, so if you're looking for punishment, you'll get it. I didn't even dare try the hard mode. You probably just die in one hit to everything.

Just to bring a counterpart, since it seems needed, this is possibly one of the most sensible simple comments of this week ^^ ! Seriously, in the research field, we actually pay contradictors to serve this purpose - which isn't a role as easy to play as it might seem - and even so, we sometimes have trouble bringing in the right people. By all means, Breja, keep going...

But as the saying goes: "There’s a difference between skepticism and cynicism", there is also a difference between criticism and just being negative. Only one of those two is constructive.

Also I want to add that much of these comments come from a game they haven't even played. Hell, they haven't watched anyone else play it to get an idea of it. That's why I added the video in my post. If you look at that and say, "that looks awful" as you're actually seeing the game in real time, then yeah I can kinda respect that. I've watched a few minutes of gameplay footage from some games to see if it's worth checking out. If it doesn't catch my attention, I won't pick it up. For me though it's just mechanics I don't like. If I see some things in the game that are just not that great or I read reviews where people are being critical, then I will take those into consideration as well. I definitely look at Steam reviews and dev responses there. Those people already played the game, so they have more experience than I do with it at the current time.
