Who watches the watchman?

This is the Police, a gritty strategy/adventure game about bending and upholding the law as head of the city's finest, is available now for Windows, Mac, and Linux, DRM-free on GOG.com, with GOG Galaxy support for achievements and a 10% launch discount.

Jack Boyd isn't looking for much. Just a fat retirement check, some quality time at his favourite gentlemen's club, and perhaps a bit of goddamn order in this goddamn city. All around him, Freeburg is going straight to hell and as the Chief of Police he will not stand for it.
Deal with the criminals in any way you see fit, manage your police officers in an efficient manner, fight the forces of corruption and organized crime, and crack the toughest cases by collecting evidence or bribing the right people. Each decision you make has its own price and when all's said and done, you will walk away from this cesspit with $500.000 worth of savings. Or as a man broken beyond recognition. It all depends on how well you'll play your cards during your remaining 180 days on the force.

Play both sides of the good cop-bad cop routine and knock on some troublemakers' doors shouting This is the Police, DRM-free on GOG.com.
The 10% discount will last until August 9, 3:59 PM UTC.

JudasIscariot: We've sent the backer keys out already :)
Thanks for the heads up, got my key now.

styggron: I got burned several times by KS on the DRM issue and "offline available" issue. I will never back KS software ever again.
As someone working on the crowdfunding industry I'd ask you to reconsider, but you've probably heard the arguments before so I'll leave it at a plea.

vulchor: Let me know when you figure it out. I'm also waiting for mine. Funny, I don't even remember a survey asking if I wanted a Steam or GOG key, even though I'm pretty sure they said on the kickstarter they were going to try to bring it to GOG. I know they said they'd have it DRM free.

P1na: I sent them a message through KS, hopefully it won't be another Chaos reborn because that one was horrible.

Edit: They got back at me, seems like they don't have GOG keys for backers at the moment. Which is pretty damn annoying, but I can wait; just I hope we do eventually get them. They sent me a steam key instead, because of course they did. It said something about beta testing though.
I had messaged them yesterday, but they didn't even respond back to it (I suppose they were innundated) until after they sent me my GOG key today at noon GMT -6. Oh well, this was better than the Armello DRM-free release (took them more than a month after the Steam release, and without any of the promised backer content)

I'm still waiting for a Chaos Reborn key. Funny thing is I don't even like the game and consider it a failure, but I still want to have a key regardless so I don't get that game on one of GOG's random sale events.

I'd be amongst the first to say I ADORE indie devs. I almost have all of the IN DEV titles here. I even have favourite indie devs like Positech and Introversion where I buy from them *and* here on GoG just to support them because I think they are awesome. Here I know I am safe with my requirements of no DRM, direct download and offline.

On KS, when a dev goes back on what they say they will do and I make it specific I am pledging for DRM free and Offline and they say it is, I expect them to honour that. When they don't or very late just decide to change, this is not on. I don't mean any game mechanic but I mean the conditions I back under. DRM Free, fully offline and direct download. I have no issues if it has MP so long as I can be SP offline. These are my non negotiables. It is when any of these get changed that I have issue with.

I have backed titles I'm not going to play because of this hence I "lost" money. Not only once, so NEVER again is the only way I can go forward with this. I can't risk it. Been burned too many times sorry. Each dev is different, but some try to wriggle out of it with semantics, this is why I always ask 100% specifics. It should not be like this. then they try to skim around my questions with generalities and not answer it directly, then I have to again tell them they have not answered the question. Many don't like it. Well tough. I'm the investor here ! They need to answer my questions and they need to honour what they say. Not try to wriggle out of it. (For those that tried that).

Not going to ever back Software KS title again sorry. I can't risk it. "lost" way too much. Other KS yes, Software nope.

styggron: It is annoying there are no save slots per se but it DOES save your last spot.

Here is the problem with that though. If you get killed right after the save slot, then it is no point. You go back there with "continue" and next you are bye bye so you have to start over. This I don't like. It should save a few positions or give you a save slot so you can fork your saves.

I'm going to see if I can "keep" the sames somehow. I really don't want like losing everything and starting over. Multiple save slots should be standard. If you don't want them no problem, but if you do..... :)

MikeMaximus: I've only got a little bit of time in the game so far, so maybe i'm confused here.

But I noticed if you click "Load Game" from the menu, it does give you a choice of prior dates to start playing from. It looks like it checkpoints the beginning of each week.
Oh my godnes really ? I didn't check that silly me ! Ooooops.

Some software KS have been ok but not going down that path again. As for other Kickstarters, all good. Software is too much of a risk for me as I want DRM free and offline and no third party manager downloading etc I want direct download.

Up to you, we each have our own priorities. Personally, I back projects whose concept I like in order to give devs a chance to materialize it into something I will like. Sometimes goes well, sometimes it doesn't. The risk I'm not willint to take is a game that looks right up my alley not being made because I didn't want to gamble 10$. Even if it doesn't come to GOG right away, if it's actually made, there is a chance of it going DRM-free sometime later.

Again, not for everybody. I should know, my life was on the line because of inability to poop.
Just wanted to chime in here to express my adoration for certain aspects of this game. There’s a great story here, and at the centre is an earnest police chief (voiced by the Duke Nukem voice actor Jon St. John) narrating his descent into corruption with wry amusement. Between the jazz & swing music and minimalist art, This is the Police forges its own unique style. It’s a shame there’s just not enough to the gameplay to support its bloated length - the game quickly achieves everything it can within the confines of the mechanics.

I would still buy it again in a heartbeat. Sometimes a game can get by on its theme and presentation, especially if its a smaller Indi project.

Good call on that one, pal.
Did you find the game a bit slow? I mean, the cut scenes, the plot and all? :)
Thanks!

Couldn’t get enough of the cut scenes. The chief’s bizarre relationships and his reactions to them hooked me from the start and provided some genuine laugh out loud moments. Bizarre would also describe booting up the game, because the intro cut scene kicks in and a 60 year old police chief says ‘shaking my tits to the press…’ before the option comes up to skip to the main menu. Imagine hearing that every day.

CALM YOUR TITS! ;)

Dude, so awesome to hear that! Thanks and I mean it.
Game looks a little noir, blended in with some sweet action and logical thinking. My cup, for sure!
The game is pretty awesome, bought it yersterday and been kind of addicted to it ever since.

One thing i wish however is that there were more enlighting tooltips for several things, like for example:

1. What effect does sending officers to a BBQ has? Does it raises morale if so where is morale displayed? does it rest them?

2. Hiring a Snitch, what kind of information does he/she gathers? Is this prosses automatic and random? When do i get such information(i had a snitch for 20+days and never got any pop-up message from him other than when they killed him).

3. If i send somebody to the police academy, does it means that they will not be able to work their next shift, for a few days, or they will work as normal?

4. I can send confiscated weapons/cocaine/jewerly, etc back to the Police HQ or sell them via the Mafia. is there any downsides to selling them via the mafia? What does sending them back to HQ means = evidence locker?

5. I get asked to fire all black people... is there any difference ingame between an african american and a mulato for example? I think Etnicity and Age should be displayed on the policemen portraits. Also would be great if info such as how many times he is drunk to work, or ask for a free day, etc would be displayed on his portrait.

6. Calls from City Hall and from the MOB should also work on a timer, rather than requiring instant action as they do now. Sometimes the officers are all away but would be back in a matter of seconds, but the game forces you to refuse the petition outright if no officers are at the base. A bit frustrating, specially when all other missions are on a regular timer.

7. What is stoping me from requesting EVERYTHING from City Hall each time? At the begining of the game it is mentioned that we should really think about what we trully need, this hints at having to choose and prioritise, but right now everytime i have asked for all 4 things toguether i have got them, or at least got 3/4 and i havent even been a big City Hall ass kisser(did not fired blacks, old, nor hired half woman, nor used force against the protestants).
