To be fair almost all genres/games are beaten to death
Games these days are more or less just variations of what has come before
There are Wery few games these days that have a completely new concept or ground-breaking gameplay
so, most times it's only the story, characters, setting and maybe better graphics and so on that's truly changed but the concept may have been used dozens of times before

for example Racing games have been around since Atari if I'm not mistaken
The mecanics , graphics and the thing you drive might have changed as time has gone on but the concept of driving in or on some sort of vehicle have stayed the same
In Rpg,s the story migth change and so does the setting and the characters but you are essentially roleplaying a character or characters that are either have the misson to beat up the bad guys or the good guys depending on if the devs made the MC/Mc,s perpective from a good guy or a bad guy

That's pretty much human nature at this point. Hell, I can make a game about two babies bonking each other with milk bottle and it's pretty much a war between two babies.

For those of us who prefer both historical and conflict-related games, it's great to see GOG releasing new games in those genres!

While I play fantasy games as well, my heart is in historical games... and that often means war gaming. Certainly myhtic quests and fighting dragons can be fun, but IMHO playing historical scenarios which had real consequences -- on both a personal and grand scale -- is more engaging... and sometimes a person (myself) even learns a thing or two!

Glad to see The Grand Tactician: The Civil War (1861-1865) release. Now I'll wait for this and the Ultimate General games (Gettysburg and Civil War) to go on sale!

Well, H. G. Wells defended that people played wargames INSTEAD of playing with real soldiers. Like, let us send soldiers to Egypt/India/Sudan/Greece/Suez/The Falklands and whatnot. He thought that by playing people would defuse their agression and fantasies of glory. He was a pacifist when it was not fashionable and also an enthusiast of wargames.

That said, one can become weary of slaughter even in games, eventually.


About The Grand Tactician, the game looks nice, surely it will bring enjoyment to many!

The problem with Gog is that I don't trust their update schedule. Steam games usually get updates as soon as they launch, whereas Gog gamers have to fight devs to get updates. If I KNEW this game was going to updated regularly, and that the devs cared, I would buy it on Gog. So far, gog post-launch support is abysmal, and I won't be supporting it.

DRM free and installers are yours forever though. I think this makes the waiting worthy it. I always keep at least 2 versions of installers in my HDD, so I never have to settle for the worse (devs do mess things up sometimes and devs seldom leave the option to roll back on Steam). Did I mention DRM-free and installers are yours forever?

For me DRM-free is only as good as the updating of the offline installers, which isn't very good, and GOG's customer service is terrible unless you want wallet funds.

Anything to share concerning the actual game? Surely there are other threads for general complaints, or the n-nth might be open as well.
