The marvels of evolution.

SPORE™, an organic playground of custom-made creations, is available now, DRM-free on GOG.com, with a 60% launch discount.

At what stage does a living organism start taking its shape, absorbing influences from its environment, its parents, or its peers? For these SPORE™s it happens during their very conception when you get to decide their characteristics and traits, then see them grow from Cells, to Creatures, to an entire Tribe, to a glorious Civilization, and eventually a Space-faring people. Apart from your virtual offspring themselves, you will also get to design their vehicles and buildings, as well as determine all aspects of their eventful lives. And eventful they will be, because when you start exploring the universe, other species might try to befriend or fight your guys for intergalactic supremacy. It's a wonderful journey that begins with the versatile creation tool, but the decisions you make along the way will determine how, where, or even when it will end.

Create your own unique species and spread their influence across the galaxy with SPORE™, DRM-free on GOG.com.
The 60% discount will last until September 29, 12:59 PM UTC.

Austrobogulator: Now do Darkspore.
avatar
triock: Well, as Darkspore is basically an online game, ain't gonna happen.
You can say it was, as EA shut down the server on march 1st of this year. Never played it, but it looked diabloesque, which from gameplay videos looked really fun, what a shame.

This is the game which has almost all things which No Man's Sky promised.

Ixamyakxim: Okay I have to ask what the deal is with this game.

I remember the idea of it sounded very compelling on release, plus it had Will Wright behind it. Then it released and *boom* - what was so "bad" about it? I completely missed what happened post-release.

Because the game actually does look really interesting.
so, the biggest problem with spore, really, is how shallow it is:

the game is broken into phases. no phase lasts more than about two hours. each phase is basically a game idea you've seen before, somewhere else, done with more depth.

phase 1: you play a very beautiful [and somewhat customizable] game of what amounts to "tasty planet." the game calls this the "cell phase."

phase 2: you play a stripped down rpg. you have to make friends or kill everything that stands in your way while collecting parts to evolve. i feel like this is the best part of the game and should have been expanded on - and they sort of did, with galactic adventures - but never to the extent they should have.

and so on. i did a lp of it if you're even a little curious [and you can watch that here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLMhI8uDx_hIIekgwIeUjAGms1gyeWOey8

i also did a written review, which you can read here: http://greywolfe.co.za/blog/spore-review-beautiful-but-shallow/
] but!

i didn't do anything with creepy and cute/galactic adventures [because i didn't have those.]

i want to say that $12 is a bit steep if you're curious. i'd wait for it to be cheaper or i'd /certainly/ do research.

Nifty little game. If I wasn't running Ubuntu these days I'd pick this up. Could try Wine I guess...

CelineSSauve: Horrendous DRM happened.
Ahhh didn't know. I always thought Starforce was the progenitor of the early DRM horror story - didn't realize this one had it too (surprised too, coming from Wright - always thought of him as a "gamer's gamer" who would push back on that kind of thing). Even more neat to see it here then.

Thanks for this. Doesn't sound too bad (and strangely enough I always thought the game was mostly RTS). I might check out your LP to get a better idea of what it's all about.
Hmmm. Looks interesting. Is this kind of like the Sims, but with molecules? (And speaking of Sims, it would be nice to get Sims 1 & 2 here).
Spore, also known as Penis Creature Simulator.

Spore was legendary for its DRM. It is the anti-life equation, the black grail, the libris mortis - an unholy artefact for the forces of evil. Not only did the single-player portion require an Internet connection, but it also had limited activations (3, I think?) which were used up if you so much as sneezed on your graphic's card. If customers used up their activations and still wanted to be able to play the game they paid for, they had to run the gauntlet that was EA's customer support which was only available in America. Don't get me started on the horror stories that came out of that.

On the gameplay side, there just wasn't anywhere near as much depth to Spore as promised. Many of the features seemed to have been scaled back. Despite all that, the Spore presentation by Robin Williams still cheers me up. Lovely guy.
I really enjoyed this game. I am super tempted to buy it again. I still have the discs for all of these, maybe we can do that thing where we get a GOG copy with pictures of the physical copy someday? Maybe?

Some things about the game:
-I made it to the center of the universe, but never managed to find earth. I'd replay it for a chance to do both.

-For creature level (after the water stuff, but before the tribal), I recommend creating a traveling group of rogue critters. Despite their boost to your character after defeating them, they are more useful as comrades.

-I always stayed in the creature level until I found all the parts I was looking for. Frequently, there were very few other species left on my planet/continent.

-For space travel, I highly recommend the "insta-warp home" power. Makes travelling much less unnerving.

-Another space faring thing: I didn't use the online content much, and that may have caused me trouble getting my captain to level up (too few missions).

Matruchus: Its a god game like the upcoming Universim just different aspect. In Spore you evolve your people from cells, to beings, create their body parts and put them together and help them conquer your planet and then go in to space and do stuff there :)
Oh, so it's basically Civilization & Alpha Centauri on a molecule scale, with a touch of Darwin and a twist! :P
Thanks for the info, it sounds quite intriguing. I'll watch some gameplay videos to see how the game works right away.
Nice release. I remember Spore for the DRM debacle and the nice idea and the mixed implementation of the nice idea. Wishlisted for now.

Thiev: We checked if it's still possible to create new account (fresh EA + fresh SPORE account) and it worked.
It was a quick search and I only read the headline and the 1st few lines.
Nice that it's still available. Quite astonishing too as the game is from 2008 and EA has closed servers for games that weren't even half that old.
Deleted, apologies, double post. Technical difficulties on Android..

Always nice to see a previous DRM nightmare released here.
