You can't kill the metal, the metal will live on.

Slain!, a heavy-metal action/platformer full of facemelting gore, is now available, DRM-free on GOG.com for Windows, Mac, and Linux, with GOG Galaxy support for achievements and a 10% launch discount.

Metalheads, sharpen your oversized swords and prepare your sensitive ears. This is the epic, gory, and totally heavy-metal story of Bathoryn, the long-haired hero that decided to storm six creepy-looking towers, home to six terrible overlords. Will you help him wipe the toothy grins off their ugly mugs or will you let him get Slain?

You need to master three deadly weapons, learn their gruesome combos, then figure out which one serves you best in any given situation. Switching between them quickly and timing your attacks perfectly are key to overcoming the cunning traps and the demonic hordes spread across this gothic land. Learn your craft well and your enemies will explode into a deadly bouquet of pixel-art gore. Τake one wrong step and they will get the metallic taste of your blood in their mouths. Probably while listening to the awesome soundtrack, courtesy of heavy-metal legend Curt Victor Bryant. Those bastards.

Steel your heart and hand with heavy-metal and don't let your legend get Slain!, DRM-free on GOG.com. The 10% discount will last until March 31, 6:59 PM GMT.

phaolo: I hope that the devs will fix the gameplay, because the graphic looks very cool.
My thoughts exactly, they're probably the game's strongest selling point right now. Looks like I'll be holding off this one until it's patched to a properly released game.
Yet another Early Access addition to GoG, just like Pixel Piracy and Mount & Blade: Viking Conquest.
For anyone interested, Jim Sterling's impressions, while initially optimistic, were not good:

I was strongly considering picking this up this weekend but given the feedback I've seen here I'll give it a pass for now.

It looks like it's not a particularily good game. But, Jim Sterling's impressions aren't really a trustworthy source in this case. He came to the game pretty conditioned by all the steam reviews, and even if he said many times he would go to it with an open mind... well, it didn't look like it at all. In fact the video -nor his patience- couldn't be any shorter. He didn't even try.

Yeah, Jim Sterling isn't a source you want to use for an unbiased and complete review, he is just a clickbait hunter and riding waves of popular outrage, although I may actually aggree with him on this one, not sure since he isn't showing much of the game at all.

Ah, I saw it already and.. that was one of Jim's worst videos.
The game has indeed problems, but he ignored all tooltips and didn't use all the commands..

I frowned upon him greeting viewers as "fucking Yum Yums" in the intro of his video, plus I agree with what you said above. His comment about not feeling he earned the flame sword enchantment after quite hilariously pointing out he's able to defeat the one mini boss one-handed were valid though.

Fair enough, but his gameplay footage did illustrate to me the control issues that many have cited as being one of this game's main problems. There's also the fact that you get knocked back when you get hit, which may be fine for some people, but it can be really frustrating with the platforming sections; I don't think Odallus or Volgarr the Viking did that, IIRC. There's also the issue with the animation for your attack being slower than necessary.

I'm fine with his criticism that the combat is too simplistic and shallow; sometimes all I really want is just a mindless button masher. But if the game he showed is illustrative of the actual gameplay, I could see myself being really frustrated with the game's control and the handling of the player character.

I have heard that there has been a patch issued that addresses the problems Sterling brings up but from what I've heard here the Mac build still suffers from input lag.

Isn't that in like 99% of platformers?
Maybe you meant the damage-on-contact.

The main character can use other attacks (eg: head slash), can hit projectiles back and can use magic.

Anyway, the main problems for me seem more the instakill traps\obstacles already at level 1 and the super low sound effects.

Another one I backed on KS, waiting for my key from the devs before I weigh in on the game's merits. But it looks like it's going to be fun.

But they are visible, if you see a bunch of birds hanging around a spot, that means there is a trap there. I, for one, am glad there are traps even in level 1 as it keeps people on their toes :)

The lava pools, however, seem a bit frustrating for such an early level.
I've only watched an LP, though.

Nah, they're easy as you can observe most of their patterns except maybe the furthest one in a row.

Still, it's meant to be challenging so it may not be for everyone :)
This game is scrappy as all get out, and deeply flawed. That said, I'm enjoying it quite a bit. It reminds me of those b-grade platformers you'd see all over the nes, SNES, and Genesis. More Genesis due to the darker palette, Gore, and lousy sound. It has a neat aesthetic; it's like a mix of 80s genero-fantasy and 90s alternative gothiness.

Honestly for me, the worst thing about it is it's general lack of sound effects and its shitty interwebz shorthand.

In these days of Doritos spnsorships, mountain dew sponsorships, dlc, DRM, call of duty, multiplayer everything, and terms like "gamer fuel" I'm happy to play this exceedingly troubled yet fascinating thing.
