Punching above your level.

Ruin of the Reckless, a punishing, melee-focused roguelike with swift moves and neat grooves, is now available, DRM-free on GOG.com with a 15% launch discount.

Eternity ain't that bad a deal if you can spend it blazing through a randomly generated tower, punching adorable creepers out of your way. Sure, reaching the top is the ultimate prize, but the equipment you pick up, the moves you pull off, and the gleeful destruction you deliver are truly their own rewards.

Grab the OST for some addictive tunes, or go for the Collector's Edition Art Pack, if you want a behind-the-scenes look at the game's lovely pixel art.

The 15% discount will last until May 3, 2:00 PM UTC.

Watch the trailer.

Not really a genre I get into, but if I were to buy it:

Screen shake = 0
Music volume = 0

I'm okay with the top-down / isometric view and action gameplay, but I prefer things to be a bit less frenetic.
Looks cheap with this constant "screen shake" effect.
Also art style doesn't really convince me. ... and that's a shame , because I like these kind of games and despite some comments above in this thread, I do not think we have enough _good_ games of this kind.
And another thing is that I wouldn't put them in one bag with Diablo and Torchlight. These are different concepts even if gameplay may look somewhat similar.
Awesome release !!!! Instabuy the complete pack .

dudalb: The problem is that the description and marketing are giving people no reason to buy it, since there are so many similar game out there. It looks like Shovelware.
I agree the trash statement is harsh, and I have no problem with GOG offering the game, but it does seem to be just another Rogue Fantasy game, of which there is a plethora out there. all hoping to be the next "Diablo" or "Torchlight".If you don't like this week's roguelike game, just wait till next weeks. they are the game equivalent of Grade B movies, trying to cash in on a big hit.
I guess if you are absloutley in love with the Rogue Genre you would be excited, but for most of us this looks "Meh"m just more of the same.
If the game turns out to be well reviews, I will give it a chance. But otherwise, no. Life is too short to waste time on mediocre games, which this looks like.
I agree with your assessment, I'm just not dismissing the game based solely on how it looks. It could be full of creative ideas, the gameplay could be fun and not repetitive, there could be a lot of variety in enemies, characters, gear and tactics. If that's the case I'm more than willing to overlook mediocre visuals. We can't know that just yet, and as you said I'm also willing to give it a chance if reviews are positive.

Also I don't know about you but I think there are genres where poorer graphics are less forgivable but this is not one of them.

The graphics don't bother me at all, it is just that nothing in the marketing makes it look much different then all the other roguelike Fantasy games out there. Roguelikes are a dime a dozen nowdays.
If it is a good game, then it has one of the worst marketing campaigns I have seen for a game. You need to make your game stand out in the flood of roguelike fantasy games out there. The campaign for Ruin of the Reckless fails to do that.
I like the art style but that's it. I'm bad at action melee combat in games (and probably RL), I end up randomly mashing button and I'm always surprised when I finish the level.

The game looks top notch for people into action melee combat.
The sales page talk about "Capturing the feel of 16-bit classics". Does anyone know which older games this one takes its inspiration from?

takezodunmer2005: While this artstyle gives my eyes a hard-on, the inclusion of rebindable keys, the animation and the fact that it's made with Unity make my heart soar, it's the rogue-like/lite that tied the brick around my ankle which makes me plummet back to earth...

Unless the rogue-elements does not include permadeath, I will unfortunately have to pass, as I detest wasted effort as a game-play mechanic...If that's the case it's a crying shame as the game looks and sounds gorgeous!

Though, I hope it does magnificently in spite of my opinions of rogue-likes as gog deserves to thrive as a host for more indie titles!
Well, you can always start the game from the nearest shop level rather than going all the way down to the first level and you can also equip cards that make the game easier, if that helps any :)

IronArcturus: Has anyone tried the game yet?
Yup. I have. Plays pretty well in WINE on my Mac (10.11, wine-staging 2.6, 2013 MacBook Air), though it won't recognize my Logitech F310. Come to think of it, I think the game said in the opening text that it'll only take XBox/360/PS4 controllers.

As for the game itself? It's enjoyable enough, if you're into the genre. Me, I can't get enough of these kinds of games, even though they frustrate me to no end. I'd say that if you like Starward Rogue, Enter the Gungeon or Nuclear Throne you'll enjoy this game enough to find it worth your time and money. If you didn't, or if you're just fed up with pseudo-16/8-bit pixel art games, this won't win you over.

The controls are pretty fluid and responsive, and the game itself performs well even on hardware as old as mine (and through WINE, no less). The Chaos Card mechanic is an interesting and original touch, and it reminds me somewhat of the Idol mechanic from Bastion, except that some of the cards actually make the game a little more manageable if you keep getting your ass handed to you. The cards can also act as a loadout system, encouraging you to vary up your playstyle. The main gimmick of the game is its melee focus, which works as an interesting counterpoint to Gungeon's gameplay style. I think it works, for the most part. So far, I haven't felt like I've had to endure any particularly cheap deaths like I've had in Nuclear Throne.

As for the graphics? I could take them or leave them. I think the pseudo-16-bit aesthetic is fine enough, I just don't like how they went for a muted palette, like Titan Souls. Compared to Gungeon's gorgeously vivid colors, Reckless is very drab.

I'm having a good time with the game so far, and like I said, if you're into this rogue-like/lite/whatevers, you'll find it a very enjoyable experience. As for everyone else, wait for a deeper discount.

Just watched the trailer. Game reminds me of a game on steam called Deathstate: Abyssal Edition. Wish I had the money to pick it up, so I will just wish list it for now. I will admit the levels looked bland and not as colorful as Deathstate but that might be the look the devs were going for. Won't say anything else until I've actually played the game.
