The Call of the NES.

Odallus: The Dark Call, an authentic, modern and polished throwback to the feel and ambiance of the NES, is available now DRM-free on GOG.com!

Odallus: The Dark Call is a terrifyingly authentic throwback to the metroidvanias of old on the NES. It's a game that not only draws inspiration from titles like Ghosts 'n Goblins, Demon's Crest and Castlevania, but could easily be mistaken for one of them. For fans of days past, this title should have it all. At its core, the game is designed to recreate the ambience and feel of all the old school classics - for example, the graphics adhere strictly to the 8-bit limitations of game development back in the day. Odallus: The Dark Call makes the limitations its own, and combined with open, modern day design and responsive controls - it gracefully straddles the line between extremely old-school and extremely playable.

Peek through a highly polished window into the glory days of metroidvanias in Odallus: The Dark Call, available now DRM-free on GOG.com! If you can handle it.

fortune_p_dawg: I love the NES inspired graphics. When I was a kid the use of black (in game backgrounds) would get my imaginative gears turning. I'd wonder what lurked back there and what bizarre machinations dwell within. Today's games sorely lack moments where one's imagination can fill in the gaps, and thus feel less immersive, at least for me.
I love the visuals as well. It's obviously meant for fans of the visual style.

Also, having grown up on the Nes and Genesis, I don't remember a NES cart - even the MMC3 chip enhanced games - that looked this good; the number of parallax layers, the amount of detail on things in the back round (despite the color palette 'limitations').
Finally! I've played the demo so many times that I can beat it effortlessly now. I can't wait to play the final release. Now if GoG could get Oniken on here..... hint hint.

rampancy: So...anyone got this to work on WINE?
I actually asked one of the dev team about this - nothing that confirmed Wine would work or not. I think I'm going to give it a shot. I'll get back to you.

Also, I tired pm-ing you the email she sent so you could read it; my messages weren't going through...
awesome, awesome, awesome
Played Shadow of the Beast on Amiga 500 in like 1994, and compared to that 20+ years old game, Odallus looks and plays like garbage.

I have to respectfully disagree. While I haven't played the Amiga version, I have played SotB, and I think Odallus is still just amazing. I was just thinking earlier today how it is one of the best games I have picked up recently.
Sorry for necroing but can someone tell whether Odallus is fun with a mouse+keyboard combination or if a gamepad is recommended?

You can use the Xbox 360 controller :)

That doesn't really answer my question. That the game supports gamepads is already known to me. What I want to know is if Odallus can also be played with a keyboard/mouse-combination and if it is still fun.

Hey - sorry. It was late (for me) when I responded, which is why I mis-read your post :) I have fun playing the game using a keyboard. I've played games like Rogue Legacy and Volgarr the Viking and done just fine with a kb (you really don't need the mouse for anything in Odallus). Hope that helps!
