Hello darkness, my old friends.

Night in the Woods, an offbeat but strangely relatable story about reconsidering your life choices, is now available DRM-free on GOG.com.

When Mae returns to her hometown after three unfruitful semesters in college, everything seems changed: her friends have moved on, the city is in recession, and weird stuff is happening every night in the nearby woods. On top of all that, Mae is haunted by bizarre nightmares that totally mess up her attempts at a carefree daily routine.

maladr0Id: Now there's a third one coming up and I feel like I'm no closer to getting the hang of it :(

At least I reached the third level in the Demontower dungeon \o/

PaterAlf: In my eyes the third one is impossible with a controller (too many fast changes beween the opposite buttons).

And congratulations on reaching the third level in Demontower!
If you can't already, they should make it so you can use the D-pad for the same inputs.
Having a great time with this so far; feels really polished and smooth for an indie game. I suck at the music-mingame though ;_;

maladr0Id: To be honest, I suck at it regardless of the input device, so...
Played the first session with a keyboard and the second one with my controller and completely botched both of them. Now there's a third one coming up and I feel like I'm no closer to getting the hang of it :(

Just wait until you get to level 8...I just beat the Demontower and feel that was the hardest level by far. There might be a secret somewhere on level 10 as well, but I haven't figured that one out yet.

Oh man, congrats! Honestly, I don't see myself ever getting this far in Demontower. I mean, in my last couple of sessions I got sucked so deeply into the story, I completely neglected my Demontower dailies and now suddenly I'm at the Epilogue. I think I've spent around 12-13 hours with it in total. Worth. Every. Minute.

This game is just so unexpectedly heartfelt and awesome. Everything feels slightly whimsical but also extremely familiar at the same time - it's really hard to put into words. I will miss it dearly :/

Does anyone else think that this game absolutely needs a key or command to hug other characters?
I wish I wasn't so broke, or the game wasn't so expensive.
It looks like a really good Double Fine game.

OMG YES PLEASE

@Smannesman

It truly is a unique experience but to me it's quite different than a Double Fine game. It looks cute, yes, and the writing is smart and quirky, but the themes, the gameplay, and the narrative style don't really resemble the games that Double Fine usually makes (perhaps some parts of Costume Quest...kinda?).

That said, I'm a huge Double Fine fan and also happened to love Night in the Woods, soooo... :)

Graphically it definitely feels like one of theirs and they have made several games that mix a kind of childishness with darker or heavier themes.
Still, can't afford it.

I haven't played NitW yet, but it probably should not, exactly because of your post.

This tends to be THE redeeming quality I find in roleplaying games I otherwise bash for shallowness, plot holes, and general lack of artistic taste: when I nearly scream at the screen --
STUPID GAME WHY DON'T YOU LET ME say this or go there we could've prevented the catastrophe and saved all these people
STUPID GAME WHY do you only offer me a choice between "be a raging asshole" and "be a smug asshole" how about "sorry about your loss, anything i can do to help?"
-- and then I think, waitaminute, no one scripts real life, why don't I take the third option more often?

So I think the lack of a hug button is intentional -- you're supposed to notice it, you're supposed to wish for it, and you're supposed to realize you, yourself, have this incredible superpower no videogame character, no matter how "awesome", will ever have.
So I've completed the game and I can safely say that it was a truly unforgettable ride. I really hope to revisit these characters someday, although this isn't the kind of game that would benefit from a sequel.

Also managed to reach Level V of the Demontower game! I was literally two slashes away from vanquishing the fifth boss but alas, it was not meant to be. I'm bummed that you don't have access to it after completing the story, though. I imagine it could be easily arranged through an extra button on the main menu or something. Oh well.

maladr0Id: ...it's just that everything feels just a tad more intuitive with a gamepad.
avatar
PaterAlf: Except for the guitar-hero-minigame which is easier with the keyboard (because you can use four fingers instead of just one or two with a gamepad).
haha even then i sucked ass.
this game is alive!

Challenge accepted! I thought the first two were fairly easy, but I've played several Guitar Hero games. The timing is a bit odd though... And like in Guitar Hero, it's hard to pay attention to anything but the "notes", so I always miss the lyrics at the bottom of the screen. :(

Demontower isn't too difficult either, except for the permanent health loss as you progress through the game. Is there any way to regain some of your max health? I'm in stage 7 now and have like... 3 or 4 health points left.
