Better get ready for this old-school turn-based strategy game – Gary Grigsby's World at War: A World Divided is now out on GOG!

Gary Grigsby's World at War: A World Divided, first released in 2005, in its dynamic strategy puts you, the player, in the role of one of the most legendary leaders of history. The events of World War II unfold around you, through newsreel reports covering both historical and hypothetical events. You can choose your area of focus; as the United States, for example, you can choose to take care of Europe first, or send more reinforcements to the Pacific, seeking an early defeat for Japan – as Germany, on the other hand, you could either invade Soviet Union in 1941, or prepare forces to march into London. At your disposal are the full air, land and sea forces of each power, spies and signals intelligence as well, capable of stealing technology and other information on the enemy, and providing an upper hand in combat situations.

Check it out, now on GOG!
Are you senior officer material, the game?
This looks good. I hope GGWITE-2 will come here at some point...

This looks like Axis & Allies almost.
I wondered why it was (comparatively) cheap in comparison to the other Grigsby titles. Seems to be older and maybe a little less complex?

I would say it's like A&A since Matrix Games has difficulty label as basic.

Given ive probably dozens of titles of this broad ilk - quite a few of which ive never quite gotten into... can anybody that has experience of it give me some idea as to what stands out about it?
Grognard.

I think it had a great balance between complexity and speed of play. It remains highly abstracted, but much more interesting than Axis & Allies, without taking ages to play.

I remember being able to complete a PBEM game in a reasonable amount of time (roughly one month or so for a 4 player game. Not many PBEM go that fast with so many players).
Hearts of Iron and World in Flames are much longer to complete, and have a lot more micro-management.

GGW@W:AWD is a much more streamlined game, that focuses on the strategic level, and it does it pretty well.
