Salvaging the future.

Forsaken Remastered is now available DRM-free on GOG.COM, 10% off until August 8th, 8am UTC
The cult, futuristic 3D shooter of relentless action returns! Ride your hoverbike and blast the enemy scavengers with a devastating arsenal of primary and secondary weapons and a 360-degree range of freedom. This Remaster features anti-aliasing, ambient occlusion and motion blur effects, a slicker display HUD, unique levels and enemies previously available only in the N64 version, and several other improvements.
This was actually the first 3D accelerated game I ever saw (my friend got the disc bundled with a very early Voodoo card), and as a fan of the Descent series, I was instantly in love with it. I finally got my own copy a few months later (bundled with a Diamond card), and played the hell out of it -- until Half-Life came along, and then I forgot all about it. I've been wanting to see this game on GOG for the longest time, but I have to admit, $20 is a little steep. $10, sure thing, but not $20. Wish-listed, but I can wait 'til it goes on sale.
I remember playing the SP back in the day, and being very frustrated with the difficulty at first, until I settled into the groove of the gameplay. I made it many hours into the game, but still managed to get stuck at some point, which is when I gave up.

Still have my original big box, but I'll be picking this up as soon as I get a paycheck that isn't eaten up by expenses.

I'm not saying the game is too expensive, but at ten bucks, I'd have grabbed it without waiting. Ten bucks I can manage without too much trouble. But for 20, it goes on the wishlist. I have no problem with the price itself, and I'll gladly buy it for full price when I can do it, but sadly, I have to wait.

It's a shame that the necessities of life are so damn expensive that a regular guy with a regular job and a steady paycheck can't throw down 20 bucks for good entertainment without thinking about it.

Again, I'm not criticizing your price. You've got bills to pay too. I'm criticizing the prices of everything else in life. Prices for food and rent are going up faster than our wages. I think a lot of us are in the same boat.
Thanks, Nightdive, for all your good work, and thanks, GOG.

Oh man, this is amazing. Having only played the PS1 version before, I've always wondered how this would feel on the PC.

The real prize would be Tunnel B1, however. THAT game was boss back in the day.

Tunnel B1 is already available at Steam so it might get released on GOG too:

Woolytoes: There is a Linux port already. On Steam, just not on GOG as always.
Great...
Can't wait for what Nightdive do next.
Mm, this game didn't impress me too much when I tried it in the past.
But anyway, a new release by Nightdive is always welcome.

That reminds me, has there been any talks about getting Piko on GOG? Super Noah's Ark 3D would be a perfect accompanying piece to Wolf3D.

pbaggers: Ooh, is this another remaster from Kaiser? If so, I guess I'm in for something legitmately good.
Yes it is. Sadly Kaiser is pretty much a one man porting team,, but he's damn good at it. Look at Doom64 EX. He did an awesome job from a technical standpoint. His next projects are Powerslave and Blood EX. I don't know what to expect from him after that, but it'll be interesting to see what games he'll port into the future if he continues to do so.

Hicks233: Not all the maps have time limits.

The original poster would do well to play past the first level before ripping on the game quite so strongly.

timppu: The problem is, I couldn't even finish the first level due to the tight time limit (yes, playing on the hardest difficulty). And I sure tried. For reference, I have finished e.g. all the three Descent games on the hardest difficulty.

Did you play the PC, or the N64 version, originally?
PC version. If you had trouble with one difficulty level, why not try the next difficulty level down? That's why games have difficulty levels after all.
The launch sale has ended early, was supposed to run the 8th at 8am.

He is so XTREME, he refuses to play on anything less than the hardest available setting (despite the fact that those are often not balanced especially well).
You are probably expecting a lecture from me at this point on game difficulty levels, and I don't want to disappoint anyone, so here it is:

HunchBluntley: He is so XTREME, he refuses to play on anything less than the hardest available setting (despite the fact that those are often not balanced especially well).
Not quite true. I didn't play e.g. Doom 1-2, Serious Sam First/Second Encounters nor System Shock at the highest difficulty as those introduced gameplay elements I didn't like, which didn't exist in lower difficulty settings.

- Endlessly respawning enemies in Doom 1-2.
- Partly invisible enemies in the Serious Sam games.
- Hard time limit for the whole game in System Shock.

Those were merely annoying and gimmicky things that don't fit my gameplay style, so I avoided them because I could.

Anyway, Forsaken seems to be a case of adding difficulty levels that even the developers probably didn't think anyone could manage, including the developers themselves or the playtesters. At that point I question, why would they add such difficulty levels which are practically impossible (to everyone)?

Of course I could change the difficulty level to the easiest one and just be done with it, just like I could just as well enable cheats in order not to die at all, or just watch some youtube video of someone else playing it. So yeah there certainly are options. What I don't normally want to do is to test several different difficulty levels in order to find the "right" one for me. To me that is just lazy game development.

Extra kudos to games which don't have different difficulty levels, but find alternative ways to make it manageable to different kinds of players. Such games as Magic Carpet and Dungeon Keeper, yay! It is clear from those games they were designed and playtested very carefully and thoroughly.
