Saw this on a YouTube channel some time ago and was confused if this game evn existed or if the video was just a parody. Guess I know the answer now.
Dontcha raise my hopes up man! ;P
oof, CTD within seconds of starting the game. And I had to kill the unskippable intro through the task manager. Is this one of those games where you essentially need a fan patch just to play it normally?

Edit: Okay the intro isn't unskippable (just that one time), but the faction selection screen is extremely crash-prone.

trusteft: ...civilization style...
...read the MANUAL! Else you will either not know what to do for the most part, or how to win. More likely both....
Eck! I guess I should avoid the game then... I'm the guy who starts playing Civilization (1) or Master of Magic or Master of Orion and is like "wtf am I supposed to do in this game? So many buttons..." and stop in frustration after 30 minutes.

I am a resource RTS kind of guy I guess, they normally introduce to the game by first offering simple missions and then adding more stuff to missions one by one. I just finished (again) Age of Empires Gold, and yesterday started replaying Age of Empires 2 Gold. Great games, easy to learn too even without a manual.

EDIT: That avoidance didn't last long, bought it anyway. Too many positive comments about the game...

MartiusR: BTW - why on the game's product page there is mentioned in game modes single player and coop? From what I understand, multiplayer in this game is competetive (since all 5 players, with up to 4 AI, are competing with each other)?

WinterSnowfall: Hot seat multiplayer is supported, but it's up to the players to decide if they want to play against one another or form an alliance. There's also the possibility to "play by email", but that feels a bit vestigial in this day and age :).
With such a vast game, turns can become long, eventually. In a multiplayer game, it would make sense to play one turn in an afternoon, and find what the other players did the next time you sit down with the game. With every faction managed by a human player, it might be lots of fun, if you are into multiplayer.

Alternatively, there is hotseat. It should be possible to play remote hotseat by sharing the desktop with another player.

Then, there is always good old single player!
So, according to this tweet https://mobile.twitter.com/FadingSuns/status/1317849638108626946

we'll get Merchant Prince games (I bet it will be a pack of both parts) and Hammer of the Gods if those (EotFS and MP) games will sell well.

EotFS is doing good (page 37 or 38) when sorted by bestselling, so I guess HotG should come as well.
Glad to another good old game get added to the GOG catelog. Not my type of game, but happy for those that were waiting for it.

+1 GOG

Carradice: A great addition to GOG. You can do so much. You will defend your home planet, wage wars of conquest, intrigue in the capital planet (no standard troops allowed), and help in the war against the aliens.

You get resources from planets you own. You can use them to create new units. Special units (straight from the tabletop game) such as space infantry and recon infantry are very fun to use (cannot remember their exact names in the game, but you can figure out). Space infantry (marines) can attack starships in space (by boarding them), as well as landing on a planet (but for getting spaceborne again they must reach a spaceport). Basically, space marines are super expensive but can defeat practically anything on the surface of a planet. Although you best save them for something that is really worth it, as they are truly expensive You better take good care of them. Also, once on a planetary surface, they do not move fast. On planets you will do better with cheaper regular units for sustained combat.

Recon infantry can perceive over a long distance. They are very useful as well.

There are spies that you can use in the capital planet. And armor, artillery, more infantry, and so on. You can do whatever you want, and each planet is a world in itself. The game is vast. Resources will be scarce for everything that you are to accomplish
This is a great mini-review! The first paragraph alone is so compelling it gave me an urge to try this game.
I've been waiting for this sooooooo long <3
Finally it's here. Thanks to GOG for the release and thanks to Michael Graf from the german game mag GameStar who was so enthusiastic about that unknown but good looking game, that I thought "Okay, you have to play that one in your life one day!"
Bought & downloaded, now looking forward to play it finally, only the weekend is not in sight...

Thanks! This is really a unique game.

These reviews might help those on the fence:

To my knowledge, there are four main mods out there (if anyone wants to add or comment, you are welcome to chime in)

- Reality Mod (it gives each unit a different icon, and adds some new units such as knights and so on)
- Emperor Wars (it builds on the Reality Mod in different ways, check out what you like more)
- Nova (closer to vanilla than Hyperion)
- Hyperion (lots of changes)

One thing to like from the two first is that each unit gets a different icon. Emperor wars changes the initial distribution of planets, essentially reducing the exploration phase and starting practically in the middle game (meaning: more to manage from the start). It also adds units and restricts the kinds of places where units can be built (IIRC).

Great list! I wasn't aware of Emperor Wars, but then again I haven't checked into EFS for a while now (if you can call 15+ years a while :).

I've always liked Nova and felt Hyperion is over-engineered, but it does explore some interesting mechanics. In any case I would not recommend Hyperion to new players, wherein Nova and Reality Mod are more accessible.
I am happy we get more games from Holistic Design! While I haven't played this one, I've heard about it so many times since I joined GOG that I simply must check it out.
