Bard's Tale Fans Rejoice!

Dragon Wars, widely considered to be one of the greatest Bard's Tale spiritual sequels in existence, is available now for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux, DRM-free on GOG.com!

Dragon Wars was born when the team behind Bard's Tale (as well as Wasteland and other tactical gems) realized that they're on to a recipe ripe that blows their previous RPGs out of the water. A design philosophy that merges Bard's Tale and Wasteland innovations was sure to rock the gaming scene forever. But it sold poorly. Sales, however, were far from representative of the quality of this production - Dragon Wars was lauded by critics and its niche of fans as a true culmination of RPG history to date. With a complex skill tree for every character, varied and numerous friendly or enemy NPCs, and open-ended quest lines - fans of Bard's Tale-style games had a true reason to rejoice. Now we have one too.

Fight valiantly in the Dragon Wars, available today DRM-free on GOG.com!

TheBigLLS: I am interested to know what makes it worth that price point since the game is terribly outdated.
What is outdated is very subjective. For some people a game released just two years ago may already be outdated. For others a 1990 classic may be more enjoyable than most modern games. Also keep in mind that graphics is not everything.

BrandeX: What exactly is it that you are looking for? $5.99 is the lowest base price for games on GOG. It will only ever be any cheaper if there is a sale.

TheBigLLS: Yes I know it's the cheapest price point on GOG. I am interested to know what makes it worth that price point since the game is terribly outdated.
You have TWO choices: $5.99 or not being able to have it at all. There is nothing really to debate about it.

TheBigLLS: O.K I get that the lack of hassle is worth the money.
I couldn't tell the same about myself though. I would rather spent a lot of time to make something work than paying extra dollars.

Writing the above just made me sad because I have realized how cheaply I think my time is worth :(

toxicTom: I wouldn't see it that way. Sometimes, tinkering, making things work is it's own reward. In my case, do this this as a job (software developer), so I have enough enough of that. On the other hand my spare time is rather limited with work and family, so I prefer spending it actually playing the games instead of fiddling around with them.

In the matter of being "outdated"... Some people spend a lot of money on totally "outdated" cars or other stuff. Of course the game is old, looks not very good (not even back in the day), probably has awkward controls and horrible sound. On the other hand, it's an interesting title, in the vein of Bard's Tale, by the same people who made the latter and devs of Wasteland and Battle Chess. It wasn't very successful, so it became some kind of "niche classic". Is it worth $6? Only you can answer that, and only for yourself.

If find it it "terribly outdated", it's probably worth $0 to you, since you don't feel the need to play it. There are enough new or more graciously aged RPG titles to choose from. Another one, who missed this game in his youth and is a total fan of ancient games like this, would maybe pay $20 or more for a chance to finally play it.
A very well written post.
Thanks for taking the time and writing it.
I am now able to grasp the passion of people who like this kind of stuff much better.
It is not something that I will ever get because I as well have very little time for gaming, but you people should enjoy and relive childhood moments with this kind of games.

But I was asking for other opinions on the matter and why would a game that is so outdated in my eyes will be worth a 6$ for them.
For me it doesn't ofc but I wanted to hear the other side :)

Crosmando: The game would LOOK like it's worth more like 6$ if they included the Apple 2gs version (like they did with Bard's Tale 1-3), unfortunately they only included the dos ibm version, and like all games in the 80's the dos versions look like vomit compared to other platforms. Why wouldn't they include the apple2gs version? Who knows, Kegs doesn't need a rom so there's no rights issues.

Piranjade: I have Rebecca Heineman on twitch stream tonight, maybe she can shed some light on this. :-)
If possible they should try to get the Amiga versions. Not only for Dragon Wars but also for the Bard's Tale.
Good release!
Excellent, wishlisted for now.
On thing that I love of this early RPG is that OD&D feel that is complelling... perhaps because it remember me of endless afternoon (and nights) at the table with my friends.

No modern game can match this ...

I really don't want the Amiga version of Bard's Tale III, because I hear it has many of the same bug the DOS version has. (Also, according to a Google search result, the Amiga version of Bard's Tale I has a fairly serious bug that denies Warriors their extra attacks.)
Thank you for Dragon Wars release GOG !

But I want AMIGA version.
It visual and music is great. Particularly music is realy cool !
I prefer AMIGA sound to GS sound.
I wanna Bird's tale1/2/3 in same reason.
I would very happy if you release AMIGA version DW and BT123.

I doubt we will get either.
In order to give us the Amiga version GOG would need a Amiga emulator and have the legal use of the Amiga Bios and that is tricky, yes they could use Amiga forever but they will probley have to split revenue with them and really spliting 30% off a what 5.99 game is not worth it.

Plus we are not even getting Bard's Tale 1-3 outside of inside the Bard's Tale remake.
It's just one of those games that a younger person probably wouldn't enjoy.

It takes an old guy like me that remembers how incredible this game was back then - or at least played similar games back then - to be able to look past the clunky graphics and PC-speaker sound (no card support from what I remember) to find the gem buried beneath it.

I wish I could take everyone by the hand and show them all the awesome in this game.

Can you find all the ways out of Purgatory? I can think of five off the top of my head, but there might have been more.

Can you figure out how to instantly turn your fighter into a powerful Fighter/Druid combo?

Can you destroy all the cities in the game and still beat it?

Can you SAVE all the cities?
In case you missed the stream of Dragon Wars (with Rebecca Heineman!), here's the VOD:

Character creation took me a little longer (I was nervous) but then things went pretty smoothly.. :-)
Good game. Played it first on C-64 than again on my beloved Amiga....this is the PC version? So a miss for me.
