Take your fight directly to the peak of Mount Olympus.

Apotheon, a non linear open-world 2D action game in a unique Greek mythology setting, is available now on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux, DRM-free on GOG.com with a 15% launch discount!

Apotheon is a 2D action game set in the bronze age of Greek mythology, where humans, gods, and titans walk the earth side-by-side. But the gods have abandoned your world, and you're going to fix things the only way you know how: You will go to Mount Olympus, take down the gods, and claim their power for yourself. Apotheon is a visually stunning experience, like looking at a beautifully animated ancient Greek vase - a non-linear open-world vase. You will be able to tackle challenges that lie ahead in the order that you choose, loot, uncover new equipment, and trade with merchants. Apotheon mixes a Metroidvania style progression system with skill-based melee combat inspired by games like Mount & Blade or Chivalry.

Take your fight for survival directly to the gods in Apotheon. Available now, DRM-free on GOG.com! The 15% launch discount will last for one week, until until Tuesday, February 10, at 4:59 PM GMT.

OS Update:
Apotheon is now also available for Mac OS X and Linux. Enjoy!

Luned: Judas, are there multiple difficulty levels (i.e. an Easy Button for the slow-reflexed)?
avatar
JudasIscariot: I am not sure as I have not had the chance to actually play the game yet :)
When you complete the first level and ascend to Olympus, there is a chance to change the difficulty level. I'm sticking with the default for now, as I don't know how tough things will get.

To response to Judas's inquiry, here are my impressions so far.

So far the game is pretty good. You gradually upgrade your character along the way, and his appearance changes to match each improvement. I recommend picking up all the weapons you come across, as there are areas with plenty and areas with few, and the weapons degrade with use. Aiming is a little tricky, but there is a degree of auto-aiming as well when targeting moving opponents. The crafting so far is minimal but useful, and you don't need to be somewhere special to craft, but can do it on the fly.

The art style is great, as you can tell, though it can be a little difficult to distinguish foes when running around (they have red accents on their equipment). The variety of weapons is good, and shields are actually very useful. There is some strategy in dealing with different foes as well. The dialogue is good and decently acted, and the music is quite effective. And you character is suitably acrobatic, with different climbing/jumping/rolling moves to get past various obstacles.

So far it's a worthwhile game. If you're a fan of the genre and/or the art style, you should be safe picking it up. And otherwise if you like action platformers but already have a lot of them, wait until a bigger sale and add it to your collection then.

Weapons degrade with use? :l
How bad is it?
Quick degradation or slow.

It's fairly noticeable, especially with projectile weapons. Shields also wear down. Fortunately weapons are plentiful, at least early on. I just started the Olympus section last night, and you can't loot crates and sacks with impunity there like you could on Earth, so it's possible that weapons are about to become a lot more scarce.

Can you repair the weapons (armor/shields)?

If so, do you have to find a smith, or wait till you level up and acquire a skill to do repairs?

Thanks for the feedback, this will be going into my cart as soon as I see if Thursday brings something to join it.

I've not encountered any option except for a single instance where I found a Repair Kit among the loot. Haven't tried it out, so I don't know if picking it up immediately repaired what I was wielding, or if I can use it selectively. Other than that it seems that weapons and shields are largely intended to be disposable.

Interesting... this game is an instabuy for me, just holding off for a few days
to see what else pops up in new releases and weekend promos.

I try to combine the purchases too, whenever possible. It is still technically an instabuy... :P
this one looks interesting, hoping for Linux release. wishlisted.

gandalfnho: Looks interesting. For those already playing, how's the difficulty?
avatar
PraetorianWolfie: The normal (default) difficulty is quite ok and maybe easy-ish. I haven't tried the two others though.

You can switch difficulty to hard, after the first introductory chapter, and (supposedly) you can switch back and forth at any time (I haven't tried it). Hard mode (I think it's called Champion) means stronger enemies, that deal more damage and block more attacks.

There is also an ultimate (Olympian) difficulty setting that unlocks after you beat the game once.
Thanks for the answer

vanchann: It's weird a bit.

Requirements are about DirectX 9.0c which means there's no reason to exclude Windows XP. Maybe it works, but it isn't tested and therefore it isn't supported on XP.
avatar
Firebrand9: Steam reports it as working under XP.
I noticed this too: thanks for sharing.

Indeed! You're right.

stunning art style! i'm really happy that this is one of playstation plus's free games for the month of february.
This instantly reminded me of the Bitmap Brothers' Gods (1991), still one of my all time Amiga favorites. They too had their unmistakable style in graphics, just as this one has. Thank you GOG, wishlisted! :-D

haydenaurion: Voted for this on the wishlist ages ago, glad to see it here. Why? Because it sounds alot like one of my old NES favs:

CharlesGrey: It made me think of that game, as well. It was pretty fun, even though I never managed to finish it back then.

CrowTRobo: I owned that game back in the NES days. Loved it!

rarog4000: I thought of exactly the same game!

So happy to see that there are other fellow Olympians from the good old NES days still around that have not forgotten that gem of a game. Never really got much farther than Cerberus myself, and that is from when my reflexes were much better than now...

Having said that, will still pick up this game for several reasons:
1.) Open world anything is good (usually).
2.) The nostalgia it gives me for one of my old favorites (like it does for the folks above)
3.) The art style. I like it, but not only that -- it also definitely reminds me of the intro to the HBO series ROME, which I also enjoyed.

This is my "recovery time" portion of the year for the ol' wallet, so wishlisted for now, but it is relatively high up the preference order.
