Beautiful metroidvania title straight from Freedom Games, where we fight to bring colors back to a hand-crafted world of darkness and discover the story of Europa, a young warrior, and her ghostly childhood companion, Apino.

9 Years of Shadows is now available on GOG with a -20% launch discount that lasts until April 10th, 4 PM UTC.

We’ve said that our ongoing Spring Sale is gonna provide not only awesome gaming deals, but also great releases. And 9 Years of Shadows is certainly one of them. Fighting darkness with colors? It doesn’t get more springlike than that!

A fateful night of sorrow and ancient magic changed the life of a young child forever, and with it, everything else as mankind knew it. For 9 long years, the world has been submerged in the deepest of shadows, robbing every object and living creature of their color, their joy, and most importantly, hope.

Many brave souls have tried to venture inside the corrupting depths of Talos Castle, a long-abandoned orphanage from which the curse stemmed. All have failed, except for one. Armed with little other than her halberd and sheer nerve, Europa’s daunting quest is clear: enter the castle, find the source of darkness, and return color to the lands before it is too late. However, this adventure is not for Europa to face alone. In her most desperate hour, she encounters Apino, a cute magical bear with the ability to heal, cleanse the corruption and protect his allies.

In 9 Years of Shadows, to Europa’s goal, we will enhance our battle prowess by acquiring elemental armors and mastering the might of lightning, water, earth and fire to defeat a vast assortment of enemies, use those elements to our advantage by travel the map dynamically, surprise bosses while we change armors on the fly and perform strong combos, and obtain special abilities to swim against waterfalls, travel underground tunnels or glide through warm air currents to access hidden locations and uncover their secrets.

Moreover, music plays a special part in this game. Enigmatic composers will aid us in our mission, with the special appearance of Michiru Yamane and Norihiko Hibino, both as NPCs and composers of several tracks tuned to 432hz, a soothing frequency used in what’s known as healing music.

And there is more to music than meets the eye. Hidden bosses with musical attack patterns lurk in the shadows ready to strike. In fact, music is the binding thread that brings gameplay and storytelling together; from collecting musical notes, to performing a healing lullaby to restore your health, music is all but the soul of the game.

We’re super excited to have 9 Years of Shadows join our catalog. This unique title will be a great addition to anyone’s library and a pure joy to spend time playing it. Be sure to check it out, as well as other great offers within our Spring Sale. Let’s drive the winter darkness out with springlike colors (and discounts)! Have a great one.
The anti-Blasphemous, visually as well as in tone, it looks like.
Purchasing later today, thanks Halberd Studios & Freedom Games for the release.
Nice, will grab it tomorrow. :)
That's a hefty launch discount... and cheaper than on Steam? Curious.
I really wish that Freedom Games' games would come with achievements.
It looks good, but I'm hearing on r/metroidvania that it's pretty short and linear. Perhaps one for the wishlist to check out later when on sale and after there are more reviews.

Ah 432Hz tuning, truly the flat earth of music.
I'm really enjoying it so far. Super well-done. It feels like it might be a tad short (based on pacing that I see thus far), but, even if it is, it's a good experience to get there. (And priced accordingly.)

Added review. I wholeheartedly recommend the game. Especially at the sale price.
Note: Steam announcements show a major bug-fix-pass patch. Not on GOG yet. But they're definitely hitting the bugs some people/reviews are mentioning, especially the memory leak. Hopefully comes here soon enough!
It did take an extra few days, but dev did indeed update on GOG. GOG version is 1.0.19, same as Steam's developer updates posts... They saved the first 2 patches patches and gave them both to us at once (1.0.19 posted to Steam yesterday.)
