Hi,

I'm just wondering if I can get a refund when a game gets abandoned by the developer or GOG by stopping to give any updates.

For example I bought the game Niche here on GOG. The version here is still on 1.0.1 while the version on Steam has a way more up to date version, released for the main audience (no beta testing) some time ago.

I already wrote to the developers and to GOG support some time ago but no answer or statement from anyone. Today I wrote to the developers again. Lets see if something happens.

But I think it's a betray to sell games here which get abandoned shortly after they were released.

So I see the fault in the developers by giving no updates and in GOG by still selling this game on their store to unsuspecting customers.

We can only speculate and share anecdotes. For a real answer you just have to keep waiting for GOG support to get back to you.

I know people have gotten occasional refunds for various reasons other than "doesn't work on my system despite meeting specs."

It's more likely if you haven't downloaded the game though.

Really?!? With a name like that, I'm really surprised that game was not considered too... you know... to be sold on GOG.

Anyway, I guess demanding a refund is a strong (good) message both towards the publisher and GOG. I see on Steam that the game has received a couple of updates on December so hopefully that would mean the latest one would be coming shortly to GOG, but we are already in the middle of January so yeah something should happen soon, or at least the dev should say at which point they intend to update the GOG version too.

I'm curious if GOG waits for larger updates, and doesn't bother with smaller non-critical patches (at least for less popular games). For Niche specifically, maybe they are waiting for that wings update coming in April?

Personally, I'm a bit frustrated that this game only works sometimes on my Win 10 machine and there might be a patch on Steam that would stop it crashing.

This game wasn't too niche to be released here?

I'm sorry, I had to...

... even though I'm sure that joke has been made like 100 times already. Once more won't kill anyone.

To be fair to GOG you are paying for a product as is at the point you buy it, even indev. I don't think there is any promise to provide future items specified anywhere.

I agree with that statement, 100 percent. There was some attempts to draw GOG community attention here on forums - some guy created a GOG mix, another one asked GOG to add a "Flag Game Out-of-Date" feature. And only a GOG mix is sometimes helpful, anything else is just a talk, as far as I know.

Hope you will get either update or refund for Niche, Silverhawk.

That's one point (and also related to the classics, whether GOG can make them work on future Windows versions as well).

Anyway, I think it is healthy to expect the publisher to fix something that is broken (ie. not just selling a broken game and then expect people to be happy with it), and provide the users of non-Steam stores updates too.

Niche seems to be actively updated on Steam right now, not sure what they (or GOG) is waiting.
I got a refund for Perception. The version sold on gog is suffering from a game-breaking bug that renders a level a complete mess, it lacks multiple updates including new gameplay options and the devs have declared that they can't/won't fix the gog versions because of "problems" with gog. I suppose this was grounds enough for a refund, despite the fact that I bought this game months ago, downloaded it, played it for around 3 hours.
I got a response from the developers:

Hi ...

The newer version on Steam is still being tested on a separate branch, which means its only available for players who want to help with bug testing.
As soon as it’s all bug free and localised, we will update it on GOG as well :)

Cheers,
Philomena

Yes, I know that the newest versionis 1.0.6 is on beta testing but the version 1.0.4 was released for the main audience on steam. This version is missing here on GOG. GOG has still version 1.0.1.

How many F-bombs did you drop exactly?? Would it break the counter?

I'm serious. I even promised to repurchase the game should they ever update it. A promise I intend to keep.

And you'll notice I have cut back on my F Bombs in here. :P I still spit out the occasional one, but I've been kicked three times for it already so I am trying to ebb my output.
