Whilst the author says moddb will remain on parity with workshop history would indicate that would be “too much effort” and “not as easy as steam”. So my advice is get it now and back it up before it disappears behind a drm paywall.
That's nasty surprise.

For some reasons RtCW does not work on my Win7 64bit machine, both retail and Steam version, even with (fan)patches and else. But GOG version runs perfectly.

This is a bummer because he also re-release fan missions for the project.
From the announcement thread on moddb.com:

What does it mean for the future of the mod?
Steam is an amazing platform for both users and developers. With Steam I can provide constant and more frequent updates. And it will be much more comfortable for you to download them!
But don't worry I'm planning to maintain both Steam and ModDB versions of the mod.

Edit: No need to haste. if the author ever decides to abandon the moddb version (and so far that's only an assumption), you'll end up with the last freely available version on moddb.com anyway.
But right now (the mod isn't even available yet on Steam), all a download gives you, is the latest available version...which most RtCW players probably have already on their HDDs anyway.

Okay, can you maybe give us some context?

What game is this mod for; for example?

Yes, but we have seen how it goes before, support on multiple platforms is “too hard”. I am just giving a heads up here, once it’s gone it’s gone, and no not always is the last file still available, the hell 2 recently moved to it’s own website due to “issues with moddb”, and the files were removed completely from moddb.

Return to castle Wolfenstein. The link provides far more information.

Wait what? Never heard of that.
That's a bummer, even though I liked TH1 HD more than TH2 which felt like mess.

He's right about download speed there, it's weird how people download massive (1GB+) mods with that slow speed that would not impress anyone in ADSL era.

Well as my post there questions, I have not noticed an slow download speeds on moddb, download a couple of gig file just the other day in normal time. And not seen these ads either other than the one on the download box and around the page. Not too invasive. But up to them I suppose.

As RealRTCW developer can I clear a few things up?

RealRTCW is not being added to Steam Workshop.

Return to castle Wolfenstein doesn't even have Steam Workshop support.

RealRTCW has a separate Steam Store page and featured as community made mod, which requires RTCW Steam copy in order to be played.

And it is going to be completely free. So I dont really understand all of this paywall panic.

As you can see I already created separate branches on Github for nosteam and steam version of the mod. So yes, I'm going to keep both branches up to date. New version which will be initially released on Steam, will be released at the same time on ModDB.

DRM hasnt changed either. It is the same iortcw engine with simple .pk3 checksums.

How come there are multiple versions? Isn't it the same game?

Well, thanks for the response. I am afraid I have little faith in anything to do with steam (or beths creation club). If your happy to have two builds, and have the resource then fine. However too often it’s seen as too much effort to maintain two builds when clearly the big market is steam. Will see how it goes, but will keep my offlines.
It is going to be the same versions.

The only difference is that Steam version have Steam Workshop support for users to upload their custom maps, but doesnt have GOG support.
Thats all.

It's not that hard to keep them up to update between each other. It just takes a few more extra clicks for me.

Ah, so the custom maps will goto workshop. Well, that’s a shame. It’s these kind of things which worry. Take the quest for instance, we can’t get these here on GOG for our game as they are workshop only.
I have never said that custom maps will completely disappear from ModDB and be a Steam exclusives.

I will take custom maps we already have on moddb and simply publish them in the workshop.

Stop making false assumptions out of nowhere.

I am not. You may be willing to maintain two systems, but you have to admit it is possible that maps could be upload just o steam outside your control. As I say, it has happened before here and is why we can’t get content for the quest. Look at Skyrim, loads of content has disappeared from open sites to workshop and creation club.
A realism mod for a game about the Nazis trying to raise undead armies from the grave to defeat the Allies?
