Most RPGs coming out recently seem to be turn based, and I only like that type of combat in strategy games or when it's optional, like in Might and Magic 6-8.
I've always thought real time with pause was the best system for CRPGs, but I haven't seen or heard about many games doing it recently. I've played all the Bioware games and preordered Pillars of Eternity, but other than those are there any other newer games utilizing active pause? Suggestions would be great.

this one's probably like that, I haven't played it though
I can think of a handful of RTSs with such a feature, but the only RPGs coming to mind are

I guess you could kind of count AI War with Ancient Shadows, since the hero ship does have some RPG-esque features, but that's primarily an RTS.

I still like turn based rpgs, but I think the combat in the Baldur's Gate games is so fun. Of course you've played those though.
As for newer games? I don't know of any.

For older games there's Dungeon Siege 1 but I don't recommend it. Also UFO: Aftermath which is like a real time with pause X-Com.

Was Baldur's Gate the first to use the real time w/pause combat? I can't remember.

Not the first, but it did really refine it. I can't think of many others that did it before, but one would be the old rpg Darklands.

Ah ok, It must have just been the first game I played that used that system. Thanks for the info.

Everything I've heard about Darklands sounds great, but I just can't seem to get used to the interface. I was only really playing action games in the early 90's so a lot RPGs from before about 1995 are kind of difficult for me to get accustomed to.

I've seen a lot of gameplay, but never played it first hand actually. I want to pick it up maybe once I get some money. I don't usually have trouble getting into older games. By the way, not to de-rail, but I love your Sandro avatar! :D
Darklands
Dragon Age Origins is probably the last major one, and then they had DA2 and Inquisition that are pretty much RT IIRC. Really kinda pissed me off, though I guess it hit a mark because most people I discuss them with love that they are RT and think the combat is "Much improved!!"
I also enjoy RTwP more than turn based. I don't know any upcoming games that will have that but hopefully something. It's a pity they chose turn based for Torment Tides of Numenera if I recall correctly (the poll was like 55/45).

I can recommend Aarklash Legacy if the story and RP elements isn't too important. The entire game is focused on tactical combat with 4 units but what's great about is that when you level up your skills you get these mods that make them different and you are supposed to change them depending on your playstyle or a new type of enemy; makes gameplay much more fluid than the typical "you chose this, now've got to suffer the consequences". One technical issue is that many people seem to suffer high GPU temperatures from this game so watch out if you have bad air cooling or low end stuff so they aren't taxed insanely with too high settings.

I don't mind the interface from a technical POV, like lacking details or the design but it sure is daunting so I suppose I agree. It's a pity because it looks like a great RPG once you learn the mechanics and get into it.

The thing that intrigues me is the setting. I mean, realistic 15th century Germany? That sounds awesome.
