markrichardb: The demo doesn't really show off how it takes advantage of the new perspective
avatar
swsoboleski89: it's a demo. and what new perspectives are there in 2019?
"long range combat, knock throwing weapons out of the air"
what? you're mostly fighting and avoiding mutated people and creatures. the zombies being invalid beings relying on their most innate instincts, feeding, and the creatures almost doing the same; except being created just to kill.
He meant the over the shoulder perspective which is new to RE2.

Yes you could shoot weapons thrown at you mid air to deflect them. You had enemies camped in high spots requiring you to aim upward. You had hidden collectible medallions that you needed to find and shoot. Basically RE4 wouldn't have worked with fixed camera angles due to the depth of the gameplay.

RE2 uses a new perspective without exploiting it. The game doesn't reward your aim. The environments are also devoid of interactions so you don't gain much from a zoomed in perspective.

Imagine remaking Baldur's Gate in first person view.

if they did you'd still complain. you people keep going to back to re4 like it was masterpiece but it wasn't.

When I talked about remaking BG in first person I meant it would be a bad thing, of course I would complain.

RE4 wasnt a masterpiece but it successfully exploited the potential of the new perspective. It is pretty much the best in it's own category.

you got me there. re2 seems to be one that is hit or miss with a lot of people. in a time when "new" games have been almost exclusively garbage, it's a clean breath of air for me.

EDIT: stop, aim ,shoot. not genre defining in the third person perspective.

I really wish RE2 felt like a breath of fresh air but sadly it feels just like the rest. As far as I'm concerned it ranks in the same tier as RE6.

Well RE4 is certainly genre defining as far as survival horror w/ over the shoulder view goes.

RE4 inspired many other titles that came after and reused the same control scheme like Dead Space.

Those are merely examples of advanced targeting specific to RE4's open areas and enemies. Obviously if RE2 were to use the targeting system to the fullest, it would need to do so in a way that caters to the claustrophobic corridors and mindlessness of the zombies. An example of that might be some steam pipes the player can shoot to boil a zombie, or a glass object that can be thrown to lure zombies with the sound.

Comparisons to RE4 make sense because it was the first Resident Evil game to use an over the shoulder perspective, so you can see the radical differences between it and the fixed cameras of the original games. I'm not claiming one game is better than the other or that RE4 is a masterpiece, only that games need to be tailored to their perspective because it changes everything. CD projekt were well aware of that when they decided to go strictly first-person for Cyberpunk 2077.

I agree that Dead Space surpassed RE4 but it remains that it used the latter as a template because of how successful it was.

The comparison with RE6 is fair to me, they are both low points of the series. They both attempted to alter the formula in an unsatisfying manner. I am pretty sure that RE2 will get a good dose of criticism once the early hype dies. I quit the demo before the 30 minutes were over because the game was so dull.

Also fuck Capcom for using the exact same name so that we cant refer to the original Resident Evil 2 as RE2 without creating confusion.

Hyped for this game.

Yeshu: Why preorder before learning if the game wont have some technical issues??
Reviews are already out claiming otherwise.
The cat is out of the bag, and it a giant furry MOFO with crawling eyes, damn pure Resident Evil 2 Remake!!
Talking of Resident Evil I see Netflix are looking to do a series. (It has the same developers on board that did Superwoman Alice vs Zombies in those films.)
