A quick question - how do I determine the file size of a game? Is there a way to tell how much hard drive space a game takes up? I hope this is not something obvious, otherwise I will be quite embarrassed!

Hi Gavindale,

Are you asking about a game that is already installed or one that isn't?

Are you using the GOG Galaxy client? If not, I'd recommend you do so.

When selecting a game to be installed through Galaxy you'll be prompted with a screen that will tell you of the "Downloaded" size of the game and also the final "Installed" size of the game.

If you're looking for the size of a game already installed on your machine then find the title in question within your Galaxy library under "Installed". Then use your mouse and right-click on the game icon and on context menu move to "Manage Installation" and then click on "Show folder". You can then view the properties of the game folder and see the file size on your disk.

Unfortunately, from what I can see there's no way to have the actual game size visible from within the Galaxy client. You're able to sort games by "Size on Disk", but Galaxy doesn't actually show the actual numbers.

Hope this helps.

Um, from your own screenshot.

Is stated on the game page. Can be a little off by ~10% due to updates but is generally accurate.

You see that information when you install the game, and that was never an issue. But once the game is already installed that information is not visible from within the Galaxy client. There's a way to sort games by "Size on Disk" but the actually size in numbers is not shown.

When I have my Steam library sorted by "Size on Disk" it actually shows the numbers.

If I'm doing something wrong here then feel free to point it out to me if it is, because I'd like to know. I like being able to sort games that way and I can't on Galaxy.

I am not aware of any, unless maybe Galaxy provides that ... it certainly seems like it does after installing, but I don't use Galaxy to know if it says exactly how much space is required before installing. After installing of course, you can use Windows Explorer to give you the amount too, but I am guessing you want the size before installing.

The closest you can kind of get, without data from someone or something else, is the recommended required space, as shown in one of the screenshots provided. In reality, while not perfectly exact, that also takes into account what you need to play the game, for save files etc. That really should be your most important size concern. While installer file(s) size is important for downloading space, and extracted (installed) size is also important, none of that matters if you don't have the required space to play the game.

There are some databases you can check, that might be that 'something else' I mentioned.

You can find the DOWNLOAD Size on (every) game's shop page under "Game Details --> Size", the size of the INSTALLED game also on (every) game*s shop page under "System Requirements --> Storage".

To give you two examples (one game I don't own yet - the other I own):

Typically it would be safe to assume the unpacked form of the game is twice that of the the installer.

Of course with recent versions they've put all audio/language versions in games, and i've seen some cases where when you remove those the installed game can actually be a hair smaller than the installer. I think New Vegas was one, but i forget.

Though games that are say Visual novels and mostly media and less data files, the extracted game size will probably be very similar to that of the installer, maybe 25% larger.
