It's a known issue, your best bet is to use the Yamagi Quake II mod:

Thanks, fixed the problem for me. I'm playing the GOG version, if its a known issue the game should've been patched.

when it became known Id was just about to release the source code for Quake 2, so most source ports fixed the issue, but the Reckoning is a rush job in itself. probably the poorest release by Xatrix. still fun though.

The other mission pack, Ground Zero is nicely polished. But damn is it hard.

Not just Strife, but also as 2nd mission pack for Quake 1, Dissolution of Eternity, American McGee's Alice and a N64 port of Quake 2.

I knew about the 2nd Quake 1 MP and Alice, but I did not know they did Quake 2's N64 port.
