I haven't played any of them, but my best guess would be yes, extremely so.

Also, what tinyE said.

They are. Read the books, watch the movies, play the games - in that order.

Okay this. Perhaps I was being too harsh. The movies are okay but PLEASE read the books first.

On the other hand, if he reads the books first, he's going to really hate the movies ;-)

Not necessarily, but from movie 3 and on? Yes!

Books are much easier and more fun to fuck, though. Neither VHS, laser discs nor DVDs can compete with them. Even Betamax can't.

Hmmm... In a few of the movies they have to force the story down your throat, no time to figure it out, no mystery.

In the books, obvious details aren't written down and hinted at, things that you would have probably noticed.

I can't say either are really that good. Sure i loved reading the books when i started (back in 2002), but explicitly hiding stuff rather than good subtle hints gets on my nerves.
They do contain spoilers,

And in a flourish of blaspheme, I thought the movies were largely superior to the books (baring Goblet of Fire in which the reverse was true. Best book. Worst movie)

BTW the humor of the games is largely dependent on you knowing what is going on. I doubt the games would be as enjoyable if you didn't know what events they were referencing.

Sure, if you're a cinephile. Bibliophiles might rather fuck the books.

... twisting the meanings of cinephile and bibliophile a bit.

Would that really be so bad a situation though?

Sure.

HP has been around a long time, and has been wrapped up for a good while now. If you have any serious interest in the IP then might I recommend just pulling the trigger on getting into it? Spoiler dogging is as tricky as playing Quidditch in the rain.

I remember walking through a Boarders books (before their death) and seeing an outward facing book in a main walkway whose title spoiled the series end game. The final movies weren't out, and I hadn't made that far in the books. I was like "Why the hell would you do that?"

Because I Want to watch them on BR when I move to a new place. Not just them though, I have a long list of movies I Want to watch. For the example the Pirates of the Caribbean movies (apart the first one which I have) and many others.
I know what you are talking about being hard to avoid spoilers. The problem with these movies is that they are on TV here at least once every couple of months. Yes I can just avoid watching them when they are on, but it takes some luck to also avoid all the trailers for them. Trailers which for some reason they contain most of the story elements from the beginning, the middle and the end of movies. Because they are FRAKING $%!#$!
