Hello, fellas!

I've just tried burning Oblivion to DVD and, obviously, had to burn to two separate discs.

Disc 1 contains: setup_oblivion_1.2.0416_cs_(12788).exe and setup_oblivion_1.2.0416_cs_(12788)-1.bin;
Disc 2 contains: setup_oblivion_1.2.0416_cs_(12788)-2.bin

Once burnt, I was expecting to run the setup on the first disc, wait a while, and get prompted to insert disc 2, but the installer, at the very beginning, asked me to «specify the location of part 2 and click OK».

That can be done, but one needs to have two cdroms available in their desktop and it's hard to find one in this day and age. Is it a matter of inno build script or its version? Has anyone stumbled upon a case like this?

Any technical and/or moral support appreciated.

The installers are not meant to be used from removable media, so they require all files present. You can store them on removable media, but then you need to copy all of them to disk before installation.

It is possible to swap DVDs in this situation? Or will this crash the installer?
I assume that, at this point, the installer actually runs from a temp directory and does not need the actual setup.exe anymore. But I've never tried this myself.

I swapped the DVDs, made sure the right disc was selected, then pressed «OK». The installer asked to «specify the location of part 1» so I swapped the disks once again, so that disc 1 was inserted. Pressed «OK» again and the installer ran. I then selected «Check file integrity before installation». The install ran until about 2/3, then asked for disc 2 and I swapped the discs once again, so that disc 2 was now inserted. The game installed and ran successfully, at least up to the main menu. What they say about the easiest solution? Thank you, man!
Huh, didn't think that'd work, think all of them had to be present in the folder.
But now imagine doing that for new huge games with dozens of files...

Yes, copying the files from multiple DVDs onto my system would be a solution, but that would null the whole physical media situation: seems that many people here have been writing their games onto discs and successfully installing their games from them.

The installers have been on removable media longer than I was in this world.

Yup, I have a `Fallout: London' that would have to be written to 9 DVDs. Don't think I'll be doing that!

Unimaginably difficult:

I really have no idea where this obviously very generally perceived notion that DVD drives have vanished from the surface of the planet came from.

Someone actually taught me about putting the files on separate discs then swapping the discs as instructed until the game was installed. Pretty neat trick.

Well, DVD drives aren't part of most new laptops I'm seeing today; I've seen some new pre-made desktops that don't have them. My laptop doesn't have one. Most people don't need and don't look for them as opposed to a few years back, so I don't expect to see many of them around today and in the near future. They haven't vanished, but they are vanishing. There is a reason why you might ask a friend if they have a DVD drive before handing them your quake 3.

True. For pre-builts and laptops.

But saying it's hard to find one is simply not true.

I was actually referring to an incorporated CD/DVD drive when I said that. I, myself, found an external one pretty easily in a flea market.

Ah, the true retro experience, giving meaning to the O in Good Old Games....
Please, insert disk 23 to continue.
Be interesting to do a test, taking note of the overall time, by first copying all the BIN files and EXE file to your HDD or a portable one, from your DVD discs, then run the EXE (installer).

You might find they copy faster to a HDD than they extract to one from a disc, and any extracting would be faster run from a HDD. In any case, if you have enough free HDD space, it would be less painful than browsing etc for each disc loaded.

And any game with lots of big BIN files would of course be better suited to storing on a blu-ray ... one or more.
