Randalator: Mentally progressive or progressively mental?
Progressive Mentalism. Available since 1927 :D.

Has anyone mentioned Bigelf (Mad Hatter) and the old Watchtower yet?
Ron Jarzombek of Watchtower is the same one who made Blotted Science (see my first post) later btw together with Alex Webster of Cannibal Corpse.

I was in a Progressive Metal band once (singing from Bass to Tenor), great music but I can't stand those people anymore.
My guitar guy was a big fan of Dream Theater while I always was more the Pain of Salvation kind of guy.

zeogold: I thought that was the whole point of metal music.

Kakarot96: lol it was a joke about the "real metal". And just if you believe in something, if not, you are not being blasfemous...
I was making a joke, too. You have been...counterjoked!

WinterSnowfall: Well now, this is turning out to be quite a prog metal knowledge repository... a big thank you to everyone that contributed.

Some more I've left out:

** Circus Maximus **
Namaste
Glory of the Empire

** Haken **
Darkest Light
Initiate
Cockroach King - probably the most... unexpected video I've ever seen for a prog metal song

misterlion: Myrath, oriental progressive metal from Tunisia

WinterSnowfall: Thanks for mentioning them. I've seen them live twice actually... a promising band with a good sound.
Nice post! At last, this year I listened to Haken more carefully. I've only listened to "Affinity" so far, good album. Maybe not great overall but it is an enjoyable experience and has some songs that stand out, like "1985" for instance.

From Circus Maximus, I've listened only to "Isolate". That was some years back, maybe when it first came out. Interesting sounds, excellent voice, recommended.

One my favourite bands is Shadow Gallery. Timeless music, one of those bands that I can listen every album forever and ever. Even "Digital Ghosts" is a great album, despite the turmoil in the ranks of the band and the change of the singer. Sure, Mike Baker's voice was unique but I think Ashland's voice fits like a glove to the band's style. I consider myself extremely lucky that I had the chance to see them live, twice.

Shadow Gallery - I Believe

Shadow Gallery - Questions At Hand

Is the topic open strictly for progressive metal in the "traditional" sense or could we post some us prog/power stuff (early Fates Warning, Heir Apparent etc) and prog/tech thrash and death metal (Coroner, Cynic etc)?

Anything with clear progressive influences is fine by me... as long as we don't get in a genre mangling thicker than the Gordian knot.

I've been reluctant to mention Avantasia here, for example, because even though they have some proggy songs, they're not a prog metal band per se.

The Watchtower with Jason McMaster (later of Dangerous Toys) on vocals? I never really took the time to listen to them, but I really like some of Dangerous Toys' material.
Tool? Anyone?

I primarily meant the 80s stuff, yeah.

As far as Progressive Metal goes, most of my preferred bands (Dream Theater, Symphony X, Blind Guardian, Sonata Arctica, Kiuas) have already been mentioned.
But since you did include prog rock as well, I get to mention
Camel, Gentle Giant, King Crimson, Mike Oldfield, Uriah Heep, Electric Light Orchestra, and even some Yes.
I'm not able to post a link at the moment, but check out Epitaph, particularly their song Early Morning. The bassline in particular is just absolutely killer, one of my favorite songs for bass.

Epitaph was a late 60s/early to mid 70s band that was a mix of psychedelic rock, kraut rock, early metal and prog, at least early on, their later stuff is pretty standard 70s rock from what I remember.
Pagan's Mind
Enigmatic : Calling

Fates Warning
Monument

Dream Theater
Metropolis - Part I "The Miracle And The Sleeper"

Porcupine Tree
Anesthetize

Blind Guardian
And Then There Was Silence

Wolverine
A House Of Plague
A favorite of mine: Spiral Architect

Too bad they only made this album, it's a masterpiece nobody knows about.

I think I need to mention Adagio again, since they're the closest to Symphony X that I've ever found :

Albums :
- "Underworld"
- "Dominate"
- "Archangels in Black"
