amrit9037: Someone met his wife on WoW.
Depending on how rich that person was... it might beat Grargar's entry...

World of Warcraft

£8 * 12 * 8 years = £768

So I guess it was worth the money for him.
Had already met and settled down with wife when I started WoW. She nicked my account for herself so I had to buy a second subscription.

Household spend on WoW for both me and Wife and the 4 years daughter played to would be over £2000 (over 10 years)
According to Wikipedia, Action 52 originally sold for $199. No, it was not worth the cost.
I remember realism based PC flight sims like Falcon 3.0 etc being the most obscenely expensive games across all platforms (talking about regular release prices, not special/collector's editions or obscure console game imports from Japan).
Does this count? It's an app rather than a game, but still.

catpower1980: what are the price records in the gaming industry?
I paid 354.75€ for Bayonetta 2, but that included the Wii U console, Pro Controller, and a complimentary game that I sold unopened for 40€.

There's no way that I would have bought the console if it wasn't an exclusive, and didn't really find any other game for it that I liked to play.

Tbh I don't think there's any excuse these days for any game (even AAA titles) to be more than $50. It may have made sense in the old days when you had large manuals and packaging etc, but with digital distribution there's no excuse for prices so high.

Grargar: I think it must have been the million dollar edition of Saints Row IV with only 1 copy available.
I thought i saw a $1Million copy of Dead Rising 4 or something, which included a bunker and food and a backup generator and stuff in case of Zombie Apocalypse. Fully loaded with guns too...

Small price to get humanity's best piece of art.
Depends on what parameters and boundaries one puts on the type of game and other factors but if I had to hazard a guess I would say it is probably World of Warcraft, since you have to pay for the game itself, then optionally any or all of the expansion packs it has - but that isn't the real cost of the game. Then you have to tack on the $15-20 or whatever per month subscription fee and any other cash dumped into the game and its surrounding ecosystem over the time period where Blizzard's vacuum cleaner is hooked up to your wallet.

A friend of mine calculated an estimate that he'd spent over $2000 on WoW since it first came out based mostly on the cost of the game and the expansions, monthly subscription fees and a few other added expenses. Naturally the total cost of the game would vary wildly from player to player and depend on how long they were puffing on Blizzard's WoW bong.

Team Fortress 2 and the Counterstrike series is probably up there also, mostly in auxiliary opt-in costs that many gamers make but again it would be highly dependent on the individual gamer. I've never spent a cent on those games other than purchasing CS:GO as part of the Valve mega pack.

Star Citizen is $45-60 USD base price depending on which starter tier one gets, or up to $15000 if one goes for the biggest package. No doubt it will have various optional wallet vacuuming traits as well.

Microsoft FSX has zillions of nickel and dime DLC on Steam IIRC.

Really depends on whether one is looking at just the base price of something, or the total cost of ownership to the individual gamer based on their preferences for optional for-pay content/access/subscription etc.
Any Neo-Geo game on release.
Try buying a used copy of Star Trek Armada 2. $200 or more.
Well, if you include all the DLCs this game costs you 4701.24€...

Yeah, that was the one I was thinking of as well.

But personally it was definitely WoW.
