Fly me to the moon and let me play among the stats.

X4: Foundations is now available for pre-order, DRM-free.

All the building materials that define a true X-perience are here, this time fueled by an even more dynamic world and economy, plus the ability to slip inside every single ship, fly them around and upgrade them to suit your playstyle.

Pre-order the Collector's Edition now 7% off and score an exclusive paint mod, alongside its regular contents.
Regarding patches: I think there won't be any problems on Egosoft's side. They're used to DRM free and distributing patches on their own. Can't be too hard to send GOG the same DRM free patch they're using for their own site. This could very well be a case where Galaxy users have to wait longer for a patch than non-Galaxy users ;)

Themken: Games are up to date. Once there were repeated problems with an update not working as it should but it seems to have been solved.

Egosoft is usually very good with supporting and fixing their games.

RoseLegion: Yeah I was considering a pruchase to support the choice of a day one release but a 7% discount plus an exclusive (don't really like fully exclusive game content even if I have it) paint mod which is DRM'ed kind of puts a damper on my desire to spend nearly $80 USD sight unseen.

Can anyone speak to the quality and consistancy of updates and support for their other titiles on GOG?
If they provide actual support for the GOG version that's a solid mark in their favor but if they're one of the groups and treats GOG like an abandonware sight I may just have to pass entirely.

eisberg77: Once X rebirth came to GoG in 2016, it got the same updates that Steam did on the same day. There have been a lot of updates in the last 2 years on that game. Egosoft is very good supporting thier games for years to come.
Thanks for the replies, sounds like I'll have to give this some serious thought.
Maybe figure out what that "paint mod" is specifically and how I feel about not having it even if I get the CE (I have zero interest in creating a new account and or needing an online connection to access what I've purchased, avoiding that sort of thing is a piece of why I'm 100% DRM free in my games shopping).

I suppose that with the discount being minimal, and the pre-order bonus being something I won't see anyway, I should probably just wait until reviews come out. For that matter I own and haven't yet finished the rest of the X series so maybe the best bet for me is to just play those and wait for all the "season pass" content to be released and buy it then.

Anyway thanks for the input everyone :)

I can give you my thoughts on the paint mod.

It looks as though it will require a membership and registration to Egos own forums. Up to you.

Egosoft employed a similar market stunt before they announced future Steam Exclusivity- it was the option for retail purchasers to register their game with steam and receive a minimilist token gesture download "a Sunny place" - it was an experiment to see what the steam uptake would be.

The paint mod looks like the same sort of deal to me.

I believe this is just a marketing measure stick- wait long enough and it will form part of the base game.
Oh so you have to sign in for the paint mod? this is the same stunt they did with BattleTech too. I still haven`t signed in because I refuse to be drmed like that. And because of that to this day, months later, i`ve never been able to use the `free` extra skin.

Only No Man`s Sky let me use the pre-order free ship without this nonsense.

Well, I never pre-order now and will think twice about purchasing X4. No preorder that`s for certain.

Damn, can`t trust any game released these days not to try some slight of hand trick with the potential buyer.

I adore X2 and X3. However, I still have phobia of Rebirth. Very nice to see X4 on GOG day 1 though.
Will wait and see feedback from forums. If the game is like X3, I'll get it here day 1.

In the interest of fairness- I don't want t start a panic here or misconstrue what Ego are asking for re the paint mod.

Time for a blue to clarify.

If Egosoft is committed to DRM-free that is a plus. I don't know what makes other devs want to sell on gog.com and then change their minds 6 months later.
If only I had the available gaming time that a game like this demands...

These games sound right up my alley, but playing X2 for a bit showed me that I couldn't give it the commitment necessary to make a real go at it.

For those who have the time, I hope it turns out as great as it sounds.

Oh, we are only talking about a few hundred of hours here. This is not EVE.

So I had a look at what a recommended graphics card would cost.... It makes the game look cheap. I need a new base computer as well but that is planned for next year anyway.

I'm basing it on how far I got in X2 after 20 hours or so. As in, not far at all. I'm slooooow at many games, and get maybe 10 hours per week of playtime. A far cry from 20 years ago, to be sure.

For what it's worth, I thought the same about Eve - that it sounded so very much like something I would love, but wouldn't be able to play enough to really dive into it.

I see what you mean, though all I did in X2 frankly was flying around with one ship and exploring every sector. You don't need to do "everything" in this game to have fun. I saw that they have a good UI this time around (one that does space out over the whole screen) so maybe I trade a little this time :)

Yeah... A few hundred hours each ;P

I didn't count how many hours I've spent with the series, but I'm pretty sure I'm above 1000 hours total O.O There was a time where I was pretty addicted to X3. I'm not sure if I can touch X4. Don't want to invest that much time again :/

Themken: I trust a Linux version will follow Q1 next year.
It probably will. Their engine is using Vulkan even on Windows (kudos for not using DirectX lock-in). And they said that Linux version is planned.
Minimum: Nvidia GTX 780/970 or AMD equivalent (Vulkan support required)
Recommended: Nvidia GTX 1070 or AMD equivalent (Vulkan support required)
Though funny that they didn't specify what the AMD equivalent is. That's not very user friendly.

I find this site to be useful to see what the equivalant of each brands are
https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gpu-hierarchy,4388.html

So in the case of the 780/970 the AMD equivalant is:

RX 580
RX 570
RX 480
RX 470
R9 390X
R9 390
R9 290X
R9 290
HD 7990

lol. I work, so I have no idea how much time I`ll have. I might be able to play a couple of hours a week! But I do still intend on getting it anyway and play it when I have time.

No pre-ordering though.
