Aturuxo: -Portugal independized itself from Spain TWICE so, after the second time, we (Spain) turned away, crossed our arms and said "well, we don't care... we didn't even want you with us to begin with". There are talks of an Iberian Confederation regularly since a couple decades back, but it doesn't seem to go anywhere so far.

karnak1: Portugal only freed itself from Spain, once, in 1640.

Don't forget that the unified kingdom of Spain only emerged with Charles V.
But yes, Portugal originally emerged from a secession of the kingdom of Castille. Back in those days every iberian king was basically a sort of "leader of outlaws, cutthroats and mercenaries". Honesty and morality were quite overrated, then

The history of the Reconquista is a fascinating one. Hispania was the "Far-West" of Europe and life there was very similar to a game of Mount&Blade or Battle Brothers. For those who like their medieval history full of blood and guts, siege, violence and warfare I suggest studying the history of the Iberian Peninsula between the 8th and 13th centuries :)
Stupid question: Where does the "Port" come from? Is it because Portugal is a coastal country with presumably many sea ports?

Exactly!
From the Wikipedia article:
"At the end of the 9th century, the region of Portugal, between the rivers Minho and Douro, was freed or reconquered from the Moors by Vímara Peres on the orders of King Alfonso III of Asturias. Finding that the region had previously had two major cities—Portus Cale in the coast and Braga in the interior, with many towns that were now deserted—he decided to repopulate and rebuild them with Portuguese and Galician refugees and other Christians."

From wikipedia's article for Portugal, Etymology section:

"The word Portugal derives from the Roman-Celtic place name Portus Cale. Cale or Cailleah was the name of a Celtic deity [2] and also the name of an early settlement located at the mouth of the Douro River (present-day Vila Nova de Gaia), which flows into the Atlantic Ocean in the north of what is now Portugal. Around 200 BC, the Romans took the Iberian Peninsula from the Carthaginians during the Second Punic War, and in the process conquered Cale and renamed it Portus Cale (Port of Cale). During the Dark Ages, the region around Portus Cale became known by the Suebi and Visigoths as Portucale."

nstgc: Portugal? Is than't that country that treats drug addiction like the mental illness it is instead of a heinous crime it isn't? So they are passing yet another ultra sane law. Nice!
I'm glad I re-rad your post. I thought you were being offensive, rather than being supportive of more clinical and comprehensive understanding of addiction,
Lets hope it spreads. Great job Portugal! :)
