Aturuxo: -Portugal independized itself from Spain TWICE so, after the second time, we (Spain) turned away, crossed our arms and said "well, we don't care... we didn't even want you with us to begin with". There are talks of an Iberian Confederation regularly since a couple decades back, but it doesn't seem to go anywhere so far.
karnak1: Portugal only freed itself from Spain, once, in 1640. Don't forget that the unified kingdom of Spain only emerged with Charles V.
But yes, Portugal originally emerged from a secession of the kingdom of Castille. Back in those days every iberian king was basically a sort of "leader of outlaws, cutthroats and mercenaries". Honesty and morality were quite overrated, then
The history of the Reconquista is a fascinating one. Hispania was the "Far-West" of Europe and life there was very similar to a game of Mount&Blade or Battle Brothers. For those who like their medieval history full of blood and guts, siege, violence and warfare I suggest studying the history of the Iberian Peninsula between the 8th and 13th centuries :)
