"A fan-made Pokemon RPG has finally been released for PC after almost a decade in development.

Pokemon Uranium consists of the usual Red/Blue formula, but introduces a lot of new things, including the region of Tandor, more than 150 Pokemon, and a Nuclear type. The goal of the game is to "recapture the classic Pokemon experience" with some twists. You can see many of the new Pokemon in the trailer below, which was released in July.

The game is now available for free to download from the Uranium website and does not require an emulator. It's available for PC, with a Mac version still to come. As of this writing, the site is down due to the sheer amount of attention it's been getting now that the project has been released, according to a tweet.

Uranium appears to be an incredibly impressive project, which makes what seems like the inevitable cease-and-desist letter from Nintendo and The Pokemon Company so unfortunate. The website and videos make it clear that Uranium is a not-for-profit fan project unaffiliated with the official Pokemon brand.

But as we've seen time and again, that has little bearing on lawyers deciding to shut down these types of fan-made games. Another impressive project, a remake of Metroid II called Project AM2R, was recently released and quickly served with DMCA takedown notices. According to a blog post on August 9, its creator had not received a cease-and-desist letter, but the DMCA requests has forced the game to essentially go underground. That may end up being the fate of Uranium as well."

AM2R looks really awesome https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKxesrCU3kg
Possibly it will continue to exist via torrents
Thanks for the link, almabrds! I had heard the name recently, but wasn't aware of the actual project. The Cease and Desist letters do have merit in some cases. Nintendo is a company that consistently re-releases its classic game library. Have a free (and superior) version of Metroid 2 available for free online has a real possibility of devaluing future sales of the original GameBoy game on Nintendo's Virtual Console.

With a profitable brand like Pokémon, this is even more risky. Sales of the upcoming Sun and Moon games could be negatively impacted by a free, fan-made PC game. It might seem preposterous, but it's a gamble Nintendo (and most other game publishers) don't want to take. Maybe someone is right on the cusp of buying a New Nintendo 3DS to they can pick up Pokémon Sun to finally check out the hype or to scratch that "Catch 'Em All" itch, but they just opt to download the fan-made Uranium version for free instead.

Many people will take offense to the company's stance on these fan projects, saying Nintendo doesn't care about or appreciate their fans. They do, probably more than most corporations, but they are a business. Nintendo's brands are some of the most valuable in the gaming market. They can't just sit idly by in situations like this.

Is this the original distributable? If so, weird that they chose to use .MSI instead of the more typical .EXE format.

While there is not much difference if you see it roughly.
But Windows Installer only allows one MSI to be installing at a time.
It's unofficial link I converted it into direct link for our community.
Original file may get removed anytime so make a backup while you can.

Correction: after 1,500,000 downloads.
About the size, it is 'light'.
After installation it only occupies 270 mb.
About the quality, so far I'm having fun. But I'm still in the first areas (I like leveling a lot, just to make sure the battles in gyms won't be too difficult).

Oh! I didn't realize you created this download link just for us. Thank you for doing that! For fear of the impending takedown, I did download it from your link...even though I am at work right now. I look forward to seeing how it plays.

I explained at length why they do this. Try not to take it personally.

Oh I don't really take it personally anymore, especially since I ditched them during the Wii era and switched to PC. It's really just a small part of a bigger problem for them imo.
Too late, Neintendo got it first, this time.

(I'm not exactly a Pokemon fan, but better download first and think later)
