A while ago I found myself thinking about an old song, wondering what its title was, and how I could find it out... then it dawned on me that GOG forum could be the right place to ask, granted that I could somehow offer at least a glimpse of it for listening. I decided to use a free notation software and try to come up with something at least vaguely resembling that song; other songs followed. So, here are my poor recreations of a few songs of old, whose titles I don't remember or have never known in the first place, along with extra bits of information that could be useful to identify them, or so I hope at least. Of course, the sounds are nowhere near the original ones and many details are certainly sketchy or just plain wrong, since I had to work from memory and through the limitations of the software and of my own musical ability. Take them for what they are.

1) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5MQoDitGKX8
This sounds like a piece of 80's synth pop. A sax solo floating above some kind of electronic accompaniment.
(EDIT-- found: "The Gold Bug" by The Alan Parsons Project)

2) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNBwrc8sf8w
I remember this song airing on music television in the early 90's. A dreamy guitar line in a relaxed, hazy atmosphere (lots of reverb, all quiet and slow, almost no tempo). Sadly, I don't remember much about the videoclip: a male singer with long hair (now that's helpful!), maybe – maybe – images of a beach and the sea, boys and girls... but maybe I say this only because it was in rotation during summer (please note: it's not Pearl Jam's “Oceans”. It's not “Wicked Game” either: there's something I definitely remember from that video...)

3) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TcSp8BqW_E
This won't be easy. I remember listening to this song years ago in a bookshop (at some point in time between 2004 and 2011, its opening and closing years) and being immediately impressed (alas, I had no recourse to Shazam or similar apps back then...). It definitely smacked of 70's American hard rock, to my ears at least, but I couldn't tell if it was a genuinely old song or a modern band striving for a vintage sound. A driving, powerful song with heavy guitars and pounding percussion, but alas, the only thing I remember is a series of undulating power chords that showed up here and there during the song. Not much, I know.

4) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWcAIJinGWE
This song was used as the theme for “Indies”, a program about alternative rock running on the Italian TV channel “Videomusic” during the early 90's. This could be enough for an Italian GOGer that's old and knowledgeable enough, but could give a clue to everybody. A surreal, laid back piece, mid-tempo, with an exotic, Eastern flavour to it and a hint of psychedelia. The percussion part is entirely my own, I just wanted to convey the idea of an active percussive background, which I seem to recall.
(EDIT-- found: "Straight to Hell" by The Clash)

5) I don't remember much about the music - it was an electro-pop heavy on synths and effects, but without a memorable "hook". The video was in CGI and featured, I seem to recall, a race among starships driven by black pilots with big "afro" hairdos, dressed in garish suits of different colours, with star-shaped decorations, big strange sunglasses etc. Lots of fluo tones and neon lighting. I know it sounds weird... this was in the early 2000s I think .

Sorry
Mobile applications SoundHound and Shazam are said to be able to identify songs by singing or humming, perhaps they can identify your recreations as well?

Siri on iOS or macOS, Google Now on Android, and Cortana on Windows 10 should be able to identify played songs (whether through the microphone, or played files on the machine, I don't know), if you have any of those, you could try that. (According to https://www.howtogeek.com/226184/how-to-identify-a-song-on-any-smartphone-pc-or-tablet/)

There's also the website midomi.com, which uses SoundHound as its backend, so you can use the service through a non-Android/iOS machine.

Maighstir: some methods
The problem with these programs is, that you have (in the best case) the song at hand...let it play...and the program recognizes title and interpret.
The better programs may find it, if you are able to buzz it, or to sing a line or two of the lyrics.
But our friend here has only made some (very short) synthetic examples, with which these programs simply can not work well enough.
To give you an example:
I tried all "songs" with google - 1, 3 (much too short for anything) and 4 are unrecognizable, and
2 brought up an instrumental song (so - no singer involved).
But it gets better: after trying number 2 for a second time, it brought up a different song (from 2014 - so not our friend's).
And the Italian music tv wasn't too well liked, it seems - only two clips via google/YT and none with the theme for the "indie" segment.
With the last one, he might be lucky - if some GOGger from Italy remembers the show (and the theme-song), but all the others (especially number 3)?
I dare say: no chance.

Yeah, I posted that as a suggestion, not as a definite answer. I hope my post made that much clear, at least.
Thank you for the suggestion. I tried those apps and got some results, but nothing good, predictably. Trying didn't hurt, anyway.
I know that my snippets are very short (and quite bad), but a long duration isn't always necessary: I am sure that just a few notes of "Smoke on the water" or "Rebel rebel" would be enough, to make an example. I tried, whenever possible, to include at least a definite melodic idea, although I agree that my material isn't as well known, or indeed as memorable, as those two examples above.
UPDATE

I'm resurrecting this old thread of mine to announce you that I've just stumbled upon the first song:

The Alan Parsons Project - The Gold Bug

The fun thing is, Alan Parsons Project was my main suspect right from the start, because of style, time period etc. Before posting here I listened to a lot of snippets from their catalogue, but evidently I skipped this one or didn't recognise it.
And you can judge for yourself how faithful my little rendition of the song is...
Good grief!......I didn't recognise any and I'm pretty good with picking a tune.

Tauto: Good grief!......I didn't recognise any and I'm pretty good with picking a tune.
To be honest the first song was the only one I had some hope for (there's a melody at least) and the one I cared for the most. For the other ones I realise it's very unlikely, since I can only provide very poor material to start with.

There are a couple other tunes that have occurred to me in the meantime. For these I could supply good renditions, I think, but it would be very time-consuming. I might find the resolve to make it in the near future; however, for one of them I might try with a description of the song and video first. You could call it a "eurodance" track, I think around 2000; the video just showed a simple animation of a robot, or stick man, walking, seen from the front, in black and white; the melody was in major mode, jolly, uplifting, while a robotic/guttural voice kept on repeating something like "disco d... disco d..." and maybe there was even some crowd noise mixed in. If this rings a bell...

When I try to remember something, I picture it or in this case hum/sing and eventually it comes and this has always worked for me even if it takes a couple of days. But these tunes are unknown to me so I can't help:)

That sounds vaguely familiar. It's not https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1pP5wRXkrgQ"]The Cure - Lullaby, is it?

The first thing that pops into mind is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GiSWuZUVZxw"]Who Da Funk - Shiny Disco Balls where the vocals of "disco... disco... disco..." are looped, but it's neither robotic nor guttural. I'm pretty sure that isn't what you are after.

UPDATE
This must be my lucky moment... I decided to look for some footage of that old TV programme that might have been uploaded on YouTube since the last time, and I found out that just a week ago one good soul had done just that. Well, it turned out that the clip includes at the beginning a small fragment of the song, that was enough for Shazam to identify it as "Straight to Hell" by The Clash from Combat Rock. A well-known album from a famous band, but I must confess I'm not very well acquainted with their music.

No, it isn't. I remember both the song and the video as being... sunnier :)
I'm afraid the band in question is not as well-known as The Cure. It's probably a marginal song that would be hard to identify even with the actual audio...

It isn't, actually. But thank you for trying anyway :)
I'm not even sure what that voice said. It could have been "disco beat" or whatever... I must really get around to make that sample eventually.

Well, there's another song that popped into my mind - or, rather, another videoclip. In fact, I don't remember much about the music - it was an electro-pop heavy on synths and effects, but without a memorable "hook".
