teceem: You mean the Playstation 2?

TheMonkofDestiny: Yes, I got lazy and didn't slap a number in there because I figured the context was sufficient and nobody was buying the old gray Playstations and PSOnes expecting them to play movies. Well, I hope they weren't anyway.
I wouldn't be surprised if there were (very bad quality) movies on CD-ROM... After all, there was laser disc many years before DVD. ;-)

VCDs were a thing at the time (still are I guess, but options surely must've helped box out that market) but I don't believe they were capable of playing them as-is. Could be mistaken about that though.

I forgot about those - a quick search: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gcdxsV0Qo0s
It wasn't 'impossible', maybe even without extra hardware (modding the console).
Anyway, this is getting really offtopic here. :-)

Meh, I have far too many consoles. Mostly for the odd exclusive. Got a PS4 for RDR2, waste of money there. God of war however was a great game. That and Diablo 3 (which isn’t a good game by any means) is the only reason I keep it around. The last of us and bloodourne were just naff, and the limited HD out put is so much worse than anything I get on PC (through my uwhd curved with gsync) it’s just not funny.
So no, won’t be getting a ps5, would rather spend the money on a new graphics card or maybe 5 hdds!
I was going to buy one until I saw the launch games.

Remakes and access to a sort of PS4 greatest hits collection.

I'll wait for more games to be available.

Im not even considering the Xbox, My Xbox one has mostly 360 games on it.
I don't think the average person interested in buying a new console thinks about the hardware.
If they prioritized or were interested in hardware I think they'd buy a gaming PC instead, and tinker away.
No, I think it will be a war between the PS5's exclusives and the cheap Xbox + GamePass option.
Sony has more kissa## media support though, so I think they will do better.
My impression is that Microsoft is more futuristic in their vision, whereas Sony has reverted to the early-mid 2000's.

Personally I think buying the digital-only PS5 would be crazy. You would be completely at the mercy of Sony's digital store, where there is no competition. It is a surrender of choice.

At the same time, I get comments by PlayStation fans that buying a PS5 will make "more games available to you", thus PC gamers should also buy a PS5. Sure, you get a handful or so of €70 exclusives, but are they really worth a €500 base cost? Especially if some of these games will eventually end-up on PC a few years later. It's a strange argument considering the vast number of PC games that will never see the light on the PS5 or Xbox. If numbers are your argument you are better off spending those €500 on buying PC games.
Shrug with indifference, the sequel.

victorchopin: Price? Launch games? Curious here!
I just ain't got a horse in the console race. I have a gaming PC for a reason. ;) That said, I do enjoy my Switch as it fills a niche the other two can't and won't fill.

I see.

Btw I don't check console releases since the ps2 one. That was magical.. pure magic 20yrs ago. Those japanese standing in line, grabbing those blue boxes, the immense gap between ps1 and ps2 quality and sound and wow, so much interest. When I saw like 20 seconds of that launch title Kessen (the one with strong Kurosawa vibes in it) on live tv I was stunned.

babark: These days, I don't think the actual specs of any of these consoles matter in the least. The main draw is the exclusive games they have.
avatar
StingingVelvet: I think these are close enough in spec that's true. There was a time it mattered, N64 being better at 3D for example, but it's been a long time. Granted I don't play console games, that's just what I've picked up from news and comparison videos and whatnot. I don't think consumers care about the PS4 being 1080p and the Xbox One being 960p, they care about games.
Hardware isn't only limited to how fast it's cpus are.

Compare the Switch with it's touchscreen, twin motion joystick controllers and it's spec sheet says one of them has an IR Motion Camera. That's going to allow for vastly different games.
I can't say i see any point to this.

Keep in mind i've not touched the XBone or PS4, and while more powerful hardware will... well probably make it faster and have more options, i don't see the point. They were already pushing incomplete games out to be fixed and patched later, and that didn't sit well, and it just feels like the further push of 'MORE PIXELS!' rather than good games. Having hardware limitations tended to make games better because they came up with inventive solutions to get the games to work, vs power-housing through and likely using weak algorithms.
