They've done extremely well iterating slightly on the same formula.
It's hard pill to swallow but Piranha Bytes were a once seminal developer that completely refused to evolve both on a technological level and in their game design. They were on a steady decline since 2003 (Gothic 2 NdR) or 2006 (Gothic 3), depending on whether you look at the game design or the financial success.
By 2024 they were nothing but a financial liability and every other owner would have pulled the plug years ago.
It's a miracle that they pulled through as long as they did.
IMO it was that Embracer wanted the Gothic IP but couldn't get it without guaranteeing PB's Elex II release.
It's like Disney making it sound like they were going to use George Lucas' outlines for new Star Wars movies in order to get George to sign... and then promptly discarding the outlines once he signed over the IP.
Only difference here is that Embracer agreed to put out Elex II.
PB should have worked to iterate more on Elex for a sequel, but I'm sure Embracer made them feel like their position was secure (in order to get that Gothic IP).
And soon they'll release the Gothic Remake.
