sunshinecorp: I know it's pointless but I'm going to say it anyway:
Steam acts as a downloader for the DRM-free games. You are then able to copy the game directory and back it up. You can then run the game on any computer, online or offline, without the Steam client running. If you can't understand that, get a refund on your brain. Naturally.

hyperagathon: I think I'll skip that step, it has obviously done nothing for you. Onto the ignore list with cretinous Steam shill...
Oh boo-hoo, the terrible loss...

ShadowWulfe: Oh damn, so no one bought it?
Price is really high no matter what he says. Granted, some developers think of setting the price high and then depend on the "discounted" "on sale" psychology to actually make money. But apparently he thinks that 40 bucks is just about right.

I'm glad we can agree in the end. You're really no loss at all.

Breja: But can it make me care about his next game? I'm so sick of hearing about him now I can't imagine wanting to play his game. And I liked Braid.
Yeah, Braid is great.

nightcraw1er.488: However in the vast majority of cases that is what its main function is. In the few that aren't under its DRM directly, they do still control the throughput - i.e. download of the product, so in essence controlling access to the product, even if its only once, and you still need to install it - hence falling into the whole metrics/advertising pit. Not to mention that you won't get any patches and such like unless the client is connected. Yes, you can say its not DRM, but its not really DRM free either.

(Note, you can use a steam command line thing apparently and not use the client on some non-ceg products apparently)

sunshinecorp: The DRM-free games on Steam aren't few. They're a lot of DRM-free games on Steam. There are lists out there that show a bunch of them, but there's no complete list (as far as I know). This is one such list: http://steam.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_DRM-free_games
You can run the client and patch the game and backup it again. It's not that hard and it's not excluding you from patches. The only thing excluding you from the patches is your own denial of running the client...
Happy denial of clientware and drm for me :o)

GR00T: [...] his refusal to bring it to GOG and the ludicrous price point made sure it was a pass for me. And to be honest, I think he's got his head firmly ensconced up his ass if he thinks DRM is going to significantly increase the sales of his next game.
Very well said, couldn't agree more.

hyperagathon: More DRM, perhaps, considering he's already using Steam. I especially like the "freedom to own" tweet in light of that.

I think The Witness has a nice art style, but the puzzles are just...blah...really not what I envisioned when he compared it to Myst. Maybe he should make his own Portal rip-off, that worked for Croteam at that price point.

sunshinecorp: Steam in itself isn't DRM. A great many games on Steam are actually DRM-free.
This.

Also, I'll take this opportunity to request any anti-Steam fanatics add me to their ignore lists as well.

OT: I'd be really interested to know what the piracy/purchase ratio for The Witness is. I don't get the impression that it's sold well enough to make it to #1 on a torrent site, unless people have more reason than usual for pirating it. Then again, I've never torrented anything, so I don't have any idea how that whole thing works.

He can do whatever he likes, I didn't pirate his game, but I wasn't going to pay $40 for it either.

Cool. Then install a game on a new PC without having to run the Steam Application which needs Internet on that one.
Sure you now can say "oh, you just had to copy the files".
NO. If I buy something, i don't want to copy files around. I want to have the INSTALLER DRM Free. That is what GOG and not STEAM does.
