Nowadays many players are looking for icons for their old games. In MS-DOS era people were using file managers like Norton Commander or DOS Navigator to browse their files. There was no desktop, so desktop icons weren't necessary. But there is hope:

old games icons

This small website is ad-free and provides super-fast download. All icons were made by me. Enjoy! :)
I mean that's nice, but most of the games on GOG come with their original icons; Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure has one for each episode, no less!

Also, here's this: An archive of Windows 98 icons.

Thanks for a comment. MS-DOS games (before Windows 95) and their original icons? If it's even possible, they would be very low-res, color palette wouldn't be very good and forget about transparency. GOG has it's own style for icons, they are all round and often high-res, but these are made by the GOG team.

Thanks for the link, looks nice.

Game icons were not all that uncommon. Of course they usually were not shipped with MS DOS versions of games until Windows 3.11 came along (and it really only took off with Windows 95, like you said) and even then many games missed them.
But other platforms did have icons. The Amiga Workbench in 1985 supported high res Icons that could fill half of the screen and also with layers for special effects (selected or unselected, sometimes two completely different images, MI1 being a good example), but of course only with very few colors. This just means that Icons DID exists, sometimes we might just to have to look a bit further to find them.

Thank you! :)

Some users made their own high-res icons based on original icons, my favorites are:

Ignition icon
Theme Hospital icon
Jagged Alliance 2 icon
...and many more.

Too bad I don't have such skills :P
I realised that not all icon names are obvious, here's the list:

arkania.ico - Realms of Arkania
bak.ico - Betrayal at Krondor
bam.ico - Bust-A-Move
bmenace.ico - Bio Menace
bthorne.ico - Blackthorne
cf.ico - Cannon Fodder
domain.ico - Ultimate Domain
eob.ico - Eye of the Beholder
heim2.ico - Heimdall 2
mblast.ico - Mega Blast
monkey.ico - Monkey Island
n_and_s.ico - North & South
pg.ico - Panzer General
psycho.ico - Psycho Pinball
synd.ico - Syndicate
w2.ico - Warlords 2 Deluxe
wiz.ico - Wizardry

Can you make one for World Rally Fever? I have the original DOS files and I can't find an icon anywhere, I don't think they had one. Even tried extracting all the .exe files.

edit: I made one for now based on the box art. Would still like to see a pixel art version, or the original if there is one.
