Elmofongo: Another negative for this game. This game's armor system breaks way too easily.
I agree on that one. It's ridiculous how fast amor and weapons break and how expensive it is to repair stuff.
I remember playing it on a P3 or a P4 (forget which) and didn't think it hard, but back then I think games like Nox were more difficult and unbalanced, it was probably the norm back then.

Matewis: Red Alert had two 'sneak peak' trailers accessible from the menu, and I used to watch them over and over: Lands of Lore 2(or 3?) and Nox. Been wanting to try both games ever since.
Well trust me when I say this the humor that the game shows in its intro is not there.

The story surprisingly is played straight and not that engaging and I have not laughed once on my playthrough.

Diablo 1 had a more interesting story than this.

And I know its unfair to compare this to Diablo. At least this game makes you run unlike Diablo 1.

I think the game expects you to carry alot of loot like weapons to sell, but the fact that you have limited inventory space negates that and its hard to go back to the home base negates that.

That a pity :P Oh well, perhaps I'll still check out Lands of Lore 2 one day. This is the trailer that was on Red Alert's menu, except the beginning part was in english for me. You can imagine how much that blew my young mind in 1997 :P

You can still try this game if you want. High;y suggest you do in the summer sale. Its not bad, its just average. But than again I did a playthrough as a warrior. Try a wizard or conjurer in your playthrough.

For some reason I suspected early on that this game might be leaning towards a caster class, which kinda makes sense if you think about it. A lazy guy in front of a tv would probably make a very poor fighter, but only a poor wizard :)

I don't imagine I'll ever get to it though. When next I play an rpg, I'll probably continue with my plan to play through all of the infinity engine games. I still have Baldurs gate 2 and Icewind Dale 2 left to go, which is 1 year easy!

I am going above and beyond and play every "Pre Rendered Isometric RPG" That extends beyond infinity engine.

Includes Fallout games, Arcanum, Divinity games, Diablo, Lionheart, Nox, Temple of Elemental Evil, Hereticm and Sacred games.

(And yes includes Original Sin, Shadowrun, Wasteland 2, and Pillers of Eternity)

That's quite an undertaking :) How far are you? Do you still have to finish the first two Fallout games? After I am done with the infinity engine games I also plan to play Temple of Elemental Evil and Neverwinter nights again. Then I'll move onto Pillars of Eternity. Not sure how many years from now that will be :P
Lionheart was a bit of a disappointment for me, and once I returned to Arcanum after finishing Planescape, I immediately uninstalled the game after one of the early dialogues. I fear that the high standards of Planescape's writing ruined the game for me :P

Finished the first Fallout, Almost done the second one (until I made it unbeatable)

Baldur's Gate 1.

Diablo 1 and 2.

Nox.

Was also attempting a Planescape playthrough but one mishap made me quit and start a third time. (You see I want to get the best playthrough outcome, I just need a recommened leveling guide)

I'm a bit ahead of you :) except for Nox. I concluded that the easiest way to play though Planescape is with a straight ass kicking warrior fast leveling in the sewers but it's not worth it. Planescape of all games, I think, should be played with very high intelligence/Wisdom/Charisma for the dialogue options, and so that fits with a caster. Plus, let me just say that the top, top levels spells in Planescape are completely unlike any other infinity engine game. It's both crazy and awesome and I won't spoil it. I didn't know what the hell was going on the first time I cast one.

Not sure how you managed to make F2 unbeatable, but seriously consider playing with, I think it was called the restoration project. From what I remember I didn't care too much for the extra locations added, but I think they fixed/added some things to/at the existing locations which made it worth it. Also, make sure there are children.

Icewind Dale came out after Planescape and it too is very lovely, especially compared to Baldurs Gate 1 and Planescape, the former is a bit old and the latter has incredibly well done, but unsettling environments. Icewind Dale is where the series of infinity engine games really start with they're incredibly beautiful locations (and a lot of snow).

Also, make sure Titan Quest is on your list :) Never finished it, and it's pretty Diablo-esque, but it's got a great atmosphere and setting.

Its just that I moved away a bit from isometric to first person rpgs like Deus Ex and System Shock 2 and Morrowind.
Good review. I didn't know about the huge difficulty spike late in the game, but I'm glad I do know now because I hate when that happens.
I have beaten the game over a dozen times. I don't remember having much of an issue with warrior but I do remember wizard being a bit hard to play first time.
Cause of being very weak mana dependent and having lots of difficult spells. when played right and using spells efficiently he was most satisfying character. It plays into power fantasy very nicely

Do try this character as he plays differently to warrior
