Did a bit of googling around and IMHO this is just a patent troll with a most likely invalid patent trying to rake in some quick cash by patent-bullying. It might drag on for a while, but if the No Man's Sky dev fights it in court I wouldn't be surprised at all if they end up invalidating the patent and making the plaintiff pay all of the legal costs.
Unfortunately we live in a world where the patent systems are understaffed and companies routinely file the most bogus patents imaginable and the patent offices are more than happy to take their application money into their coffers and grant invalid patents under the premise that if there is a lawsuit in the future contesting the patent and it shouldn't have been granted in the first place, it can be invalidated by a court at a later date.
That allows the patent office to rake in the cash and offload checking of the validity of patent claims to the courts, thus opening up a nice booming market for patent trolls (companies that exist solely to buy up bogus patents and sue people but otherwise conduct no other real world business). They are the intellectual property modern equivalent of mafia protection rackets. "Hey, if you pay us $xyz, we can make sure your business is protected... we highly recommend it... you wouldn't want to come to your shop some morning and find out oh... I dunno... that someone has thrown a brick through the window... it could happen!"
