TheDudeLebowski: You lost me. I joined Steam long after I started buying on GOG in 2018. I don't understand what you're saying since the Steam users I know are stuck on CS:GO and Dota.

Breja: Well, I didn't understand what you meant about GOG once being "dodgy site". The only such accusations I've ever heard of before were some hardline Steam users calling it a piracy site, because they assumed that's what DRM-free means.
People, normal people, dont trust gog. It's simple. They only trust Steam for pc gaming because of good PR. I mean, they made Half Life, DOTA, Portal, TF2... they are american... and GabeN's our lord and savior! PC Master race!

On the other hand, GOG is not Steam. It didn't had profiles, launchers, achievements, or anything. Also, why would I have to use another site for my games? What in the world is Poland, even? Things are changing now that GOG has been social-media-fied (at the request of their users, mind you) and how popular The Witcher and Cyberpunk ended up being, but I dunno, people really don't care about DRM free in the same way that they often don't care about PCs for gaming and prefer to buy consoles, even though a console is like a mid range laptop hardware wise.

But things could be worse. I mean, look how people think and talk about Origin and Uplay, even though every developer has the right to have a store for their games. Games as a service is an idea that eventually pushes for monopolies, but people don't mind. And EGS has nothing of value.... I mean, of REAL value to make people ditch it for Steam. But I have to say I know plenty of people who have EGS and Steam but not EGS/Steam and GOG.

Breja: Huh? You mean the way some Steam users assume DRM-free games must be pirated?

I presumed that TheDudeLebowski was referring to a popular abandonware site that has GOG links to buy here games that are no longer abandonware? Just guessing.

I was still buying hard copies of games back then, and the only digital games I had bought were from Telltale (back when they were making adventure games). I had never heard of GOG, and found out they were giving away Broken Sword Director's Cut, figured it's free and I wouldn't mind having the updated version. By "dodgy" I meant it wasn't yet established, as I was still buying hard copies, and wasn't a huge believer in downloadable games, my trust in a newfound digital retailer wasn't there yet. 7 years had passed, digital retailers became the main thing and hard copies started disappearing, GOG made a name for itself, gave away a bunch of free games and had a great catalogue to boot, so when I saw a deal on the Commandos series, by then I thought to myself I might as well. Now it's been 2 years, and my library is up to 250+ games.

So, when OP is saying he's new to GOG, I can understand that, no matter what the join date or the OP's library.
Ok, I would have never called GOG dodgy. I had an older account and I never got anything for both the overlapping reasons that I wasn't used to online purchases in general and buying digital downloads in particular. I probably made the account to get Dragonsphere and I was happy I played it as a freebie but would not have payed for it. I was still collecting LPs and 7"s, it seems a lifetime ago now.
I came here to buy old stuff I never got to finish or find, like Ultima VIII and Gabriel Knight, at full price. I was not playing videogames anymore but I wanted a nostalgic distraction. Then I was hooked with all the older games and makiing them run on Linux. And I stayed for mainly the indie stuff.
