Why? Better textures? More content? What do you think is causing this?
Larger hard drives and the internet.

It seems the drive sizes have been going up much faster than game sizes. So overall it's a win.
more data
I think there's the improvement on graphics and stuff, but sometimes the increased size is kind of silly. I remember some time ago I got a 30-something Gb update for (i believe it was) Bioshock Infinite, whice were additional language packs. Completely useless for me, should've been an optional update or something.
A while back Steam was doing a free weekend for the latest NBA2K game. I was all set to give a shot until I saw that the game's download was something like 70 gb. Nope, not bothering with that.

Back in my day, we could program an entire game in just a few megs of space.

Code bloat: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Code_bloat

Voice overs are a lot of that as well. I know swtor is 35 gigs of space on the hard drive and it;s been estimated that 80-85%-ish of it is voice files.
Are we sure?

I don't know about really new games like the new CoDs and the new Wolfenstein, but my two biggest downloads from GOG are somewhat older (Sacred 2, Jade Empire) and the StarCraft 2 free release is a 30Gb download and that game isn't exactly new either.

Of course the SC 2 download may be 1 Gb game and 29 Gb Blizzard bullshit. :P

Many games are fully voice acted, and the sound files take a ton of drive space. If you add different language packs, as noted above, it really balloons. Add in more detailed/better graphic textures, etc, and you get some big games.
We are in the “muh 60fps,muh 4k textures, muh online social space” era now and it will only get worse... Cheers

I don't think so. 1TB is nothing nowadays. Install a dozen or so new games and 1TB is almost used up. I need around 4TB to 5TB just to install a percentage of my Steam and GOG library.

I'm thinking it is the obsession with the best looking textures possible that is causing this. I don't mind too much because having nice textures is nice but at the same time, it sucks constantly having to buy new hard drives in order to install more games... I'm one of those people who like to have tons of games installed at the same time.

It drives me crazy that AAA games nowadays take around 100 Gb and indies around 10. 'member when Civ 4 was 1.4Gb? Yeah, I 'member. Member Doom 3 1.4 Gb? Warcraft III – 1 Gb? Not mentioning some pixel platformers bellow 1 Mb. Yeah... that were the days.

It stops me to play in many recent releases, 'cause I can't afford that much space – vids, music, soft, everything's chewing on memmory, like there's no opttimisation anymore.

I have 5 freaking HDDs (3 internal (>3TB) and 2 external (1.5 TB)) in my PC and it's still not enough – every day I wage a war for free space.

I have a 1Tb SSD and a bunch of games installed. Not a dozen, maybe, but I still have more than half of my drive free. Installed are: WoW, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Dishonored 2, Witcher 3, Hand of Fate, Pillars of Eternity, No Man's Sky, HotS, SC2, and a bunch of smaller ones. Also my OS, my dev tools, my music and photographs, etc.

That said, if you decide to install ALL THE GAMES, then yea, you'll run out of space. Maybe only install something you are planning on playing?

This whole thread evokes nostalgia in me.Times when developers put gameplay and style as #1 priority, and good graphics, animations and so on as an afterthought. There are of course developers who still kick ass today and keep that HDD requirement as low as possible ;).Cheers

That is 9 games though + smaller ones. When I said a dozen or so, I reallly meant around 15 to 20. And those games are more compact than usual nowadays.
